Our last spring break!

This was the last college spring break for both of us, since James graduated in May 2006 and I finished that December. We went (just the two of us this time!) to my favorite Caribbean island, Grand Cayman, and enjoyed beautiful Seven Mile Beach, fantastic scuba diving, and the perennial favorite, Stingray City!

... I thought there was going to be a fight, as I had already learned that all three Wisconsin girls would stand up for any underdog they saw. They would offer friendship to anyone, but would turn their back equally fast if they saw someone being mean. The passenger was all laughingly apologetic and gave the crew member $100 bill. I couldn't help feeling even more disgusted at this show of money making everything alright.

We danced some more, and then went upstairs to get ...

      Great Experience

      from anonymous

Great hotel - rooms were nice and very comfortable. Staff was very friendly, and seemed to go extra step. We had an ocean view room, and the view was gorgeous. The staff were very helpful in making recommendations for local restaurants, and we were never disappointed.

We were able to rent a small refrigerator for the room, and a good grocery store was nearby, which made the trip (7 days) much more enjoyable for us - eating out in Grand Cayman is very expensive, so you best prepare yourself for it in advance. I also recommend renting a car for at least part of your stay. It was inexpensive and worth the freedom it provided. Only knock I have is that the drinks are a little too expensive, but that seemed to be everywhere in Cayman.

Loved the Westin and 7 mile beach

      from Lindascotchplainsnj

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Grand Cayman for 5 nights to celebrate our 30th anniversary. It was absolutely wonderful!. The staff at the Westin was friendly and helpful and the beach was to die for. We enjoyed all the amenities as well. It was fun to have a drink at the pool bar and also the swim-up bar. I highly recommend the "cayman mama" We had a beautiful room with a private balcony and an ocean view. The Westin restaurants were also very good. The breakfast buffet at ferdinand's was delicious and a dinner at the Havana was also very good. We had a wonderful trip. Can't wait to go back again. The only thing wrong with it was that it was too short.

      Perfect quick getaway!

      from Kelrobin

My husband and I just returned from 3 nights/4 days at the Westin and were not disappointed. We simply wanted a quick getaway, had not been to the Caymans before, and wanted a little pampering. We took a 2.5 hour flight from Charlotte, and were sitting on the beach that afternoon! We used Starwood Points, and had to upgrade to get a beach view, but loved our room as it was in the "partial beach view" group and had a very private balcony. The most expensive rooms look out on the exotic pool (which is gorgeous) and the beach (which is equally beautiful), but are in view of everyone else at the pool, too, so less private than the ones on the sides. The rooms may be a little small for some (especially if you have a child), but well equipped with a great king bed and were perfect for the two of us. We spent much time at the pool, knowing full well that they expect you to use their bar, but the drinks and service were wonderful. They also have a great towel system where you sign in for towels whenever you need fresh ones. We used room service once (fast and wonderful), and ate breakfast at Ferdinand's (the eggs Sardou were terrific, and I highly recommend the Mango Papaya smoothie - best thing I had on the island!) We found everyone very polite and friendly. We booked our Stingray trip through Westin's concierge and their Red Sail group. Since we had a car, we drove to Rum Point to pick up the boat there, and Jimmy, our local guide, was terrific. The water was a little choppy and deep for young children - but a 7 year old girl in our group was able to snorkel at another spot.If you want to save money, I would hit one of the lesser hotels or get a condo for a group so you have more space and can eat in some. We did not want to cook, so we took full advantage of many varied Cayman restaurants (The Wharf, Cracked Conch, Tree House, La Bodega). We found the food wonderful everywhere we went, and met many natives. If you want a more "island" feel, you can travel to some of the less fancy h slower and so is the service! Plus, if you have children, the KFC and Burger King can be welcome relief! We never felt like the Westin was trying to gouge us - they simply run a top notch place and have certain standards. Every guest we met there were wonderful too - and it was not overly crowded - which made it nice. There were many cute honeymooners. I did not try the spa, but it looked very upscale and nice. I would hightly recommend the Westin for its service, food, beach, pool, and standards.

      Loved the Beach

      from anonymous

I have been to Grand Cayman 3 times. The Westin has a great beach, water is beautiful. Restaurants, drinks very pricey. Hotel hould at least sell water, soft drinks in one of the shops but they don't and gratuities have to be paid for every sip you take. The beds were wonderful, best I ever slept in. Lobby smells like cigars. Clientele not appealing. Many babies and children, many left with nannies whom children seemed happier with than their own parents. Overall, beautiful hotel, expenses, save for special occasion.

Nor Worth Your Time or Money

      from anonymous

Me and my Father went for 2 week vacation, great beaches, awsome diving! Hotel on the other hand...Completly dissapointed, Staff is for the most ok, but alwas trying to get every penny out of you, far to expensive for little they were offering! Too many tourist who became "employees." Hotel seems to be under kept, for a hotel that is suppose to be a great experience, it should be better maintained, and management should be a little more helpful.

      Heaven on Earth:CI-Westin Casuarina Resort

      from anonymous

My husband and I just got back from our 5th visit to the Cayman Islands. Our first visit, we stayed at the Holiday Inn, which is no longer there. This place was the island's landmark. Home to the "Barefoot Man". We now stay at the Westin.

This is the best place on the island. Best beach, best service, best everything. I've read other reviews of this resort. How could anyone complain?

As far as rates, just ask the manager for the "best" rate for your particular dates of travel. They welcome the business at any rate! As for people complaining about the beach and how rocky it is, DO YOUR RESEARCH, people. Get a map out. It's clear that coral reefs are in front of Treasure Island.etc. Stay out of the "Sleep Cheaps" and "Sleep Inns" You get what you pay for.

      Not our favorite

      from anonymous

Service poor from start. Website “mistake” indicated rate included all taxes but charged credit card $250 over advertised rate. Westin reservations would/could not correct, therefore I had to call GC on my phone bill to resolve.

Service people are students from Canada, Australia, etc, pushing $10 drinks and $15 cold sandwiches – pushier than local vendors in Jamaica. Drinks were good and we drank our share ($200 1st day). But chastised by server 2nd day for bringing small cooler with water and snacks to beach. Policy not in Westin literature. Rest of week felt uncomfortable bringing our own water to beach. Not allowed to run tab for whole day, had to sign check after each drink, sandwich, or bottle of water, to maximize gratuity. Servers motivated only by gratuities. Felt like if you weren't spending money you were not welcome, even though you are paying for a room.

Westin restaurant closed, but food at Wharf, Lobster Pot, and Reef Grill was excellent. Paid in excess of $125 without drinks.

GC is beautiful, but so are other islands with better atmosphere and service. No benefit of the extra cost. Go to Aruba.

      No complaints

My wife and I went to the Westin in Grand Cayman in February,2002. We were pleased beyond expectations. Service was great. From the hotel you could literally walk out into the water and snorkle into a coral reef. Our 2 year old daughter had an outstanding time too. We found nothing in disarray everything was clean. There if no doubt that we will go there again.

      Best hotel on grand cayman

      from anonymous

My husband and I stayed at the westin fall 2001

the room, and facilities were outstanding,on the best part of the beach all sand with shade trees,we are planning to go again this spring.

we have been to the caymans a few times and this is by far the best place to stay.little pricey but well worth the money.

      Nice but Losing Ground

      from anonymous

Great location right on beach. If beach is what you want, this is the BEST beach you will find, especially so close to a hotel.

Hotel however is expensive and falling into slight disrepair. Rumor is that staff has been cut (economy?) - if this is true, I guess it explains what we saw... chipped paint on railing of balcony, elevators not cleaned or vacuumed, fixtures in bathrooms not dusted... lots of LITTLE things that really by themselves feel nitpicky... but it adds up to an overall impression. Room not made until VERY late in the afternoon. Staff very accomodating but sparse. Service on beach very sparse.
