Wherein we drive to Banff and enjoy a hike on Sulphur Mountain We were up and on the road early - long drive today. It was cloudy in Calgary but sunny once we were in the mountains. Actually, quite warm out, when it wasn't breezy. We had breakfast at a little café along the road to Banff. The scenery was gorgeous, as expected, but we were surprised by the number of mines along the road. Access to the National Park in which Banff is located cost about $20 (Canadian) for two days. We checked in...
Banff, Alberta, Canada ahartry I've finally made it to Canada! When my parents and I arrived at the Calgary airport, we went through customs, and then we picked up our rental car. We started making our way towards Banff. There was quite a bit of traffic at first, but it cleared out once we were out of the city. Driving through the Canadian Rocky Mountains was absolutely beautiful. I listened to my iPod and gazed out the window for the entire hour and a half drive.
We first went to our hotel and checked in, and then ...
Today is my birthday! It is also our only full day in Canada!
My dad and I began the day with a hike, while my mom stayed back at the hotel. We hiked to the top of Tunnel Mountain. It was absolutely beautiful... the snow-capped mountains, the Bow River, the town of Banff... Wow! I'd never seen anything like this. The hike was fairly easy, and the weather was perfect.
After the hike, the three of us decided we would do a float trip on the river. The float trip was very nice and r...
We had breakfast at the hotel and headed into town one last time. We went to the Banff Cascade Gardens and then headed for Calgary. (One last beautiful drive!)
Banff and Lake Louise really amazing; they so beautiful, and I loved breathing the fresh, crisp air. I really hope to come back soon.
The Rocky Mountaineer is a rail trip through the Canadian Rockies. It is no ordinary train, but a tourist excursion that aims to please. The service was impecable and the attention to detail made this trip truly a trip of a lifetime. The gourmet chef onboard made each of our meals an event. I would recommend this trip or any of the Rocky Mountaineer tours to anyone. Our Itinerary: Day 1. Fly Chicago to Vancouver. Visit to the Vancouver Tower included in tour. Day 2. Board the Rocky Mountainee...

Banff, Alberta, Canada ilikechintzThe last leg of our adventure!!! We picked up our hire car (upgraded to a fancy SUV!) very early on the Sunday morning and drove all the way to Banff ... it took 12 hours all up, and was not a very pleasant experience. The day is only light between 8am and 5pm, the roads got slushier as we got higher into the mountains and our headlights got so dirty they barely penetrated the dark. We made it in one piece though and were very happy to arrive at the Rim Rock Resort in Banff, where our friends...

... from above! After we met up again, we had a picnic lunch and went to the Cave and Basin historical attraction. This is the original site of Canada's first national park. The hot springs were discovered over one hundred years ago by three men. The water absolutely reeks of sulphur...you can smell it from a good distance away. We went into the cave that the explorers originally stumbled across, spent some time in the museum ...
Banff, Alberta, Canada georgelung... left-over's. Now that we are in Canada in the summer, the area does not get dark until around 10:30. The bad news about the park - besides being the most expensive of the trip at $51 per night - was that the wi-fi did not reach our RV. So I had to drive the truck and do my blogging inside the truck (they close the office at 7) So I spent the next 3 hours uploading just half the video's from the zoo. But I did have a magnificent view of the sunset over the Rockies.
Banff, Alberta, Canada scoonpooh... was pretty great too, even if the weather blocked the view of the mountains behind slightly. There were still ice sculptures on and around the lake too from an event last month - they were amazing too. I couldn't get over the detail of all of the sculptures, there are some pretty talented people out there. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to ice skate on the lake like we intended too, so it just means we will be making another visit there sometime soon.
Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada vhenschkeI had no idea how good this bus trip was going to turn out to be. I hadn't even given it much thought. Its just a bus journey, getting from A to B. But it turned out to be my favourite part of our whole trip so far. The train from Edmonton to Jasper was cool. It was the first sight of the famous landscape. But this bus trip outshone it by far. It felt like a much more personal, detailed, and up close viewing ...
