The people in Egypt came as quite a shock after the welcoming people of Sudan with every Egyptian storeowner pleading for us to enter their stores, always promising "no hassle, no hassle". Often these salesmen will stand directly in front of you blocking your path and one man even promised Christine he wouldn't touch her if she came into his store. Shopping, even wandering around markets, in Egypt is not a ...

Peter, a seasoned chain smoker, fired them up well and good, the rest of us coughing on the power of the fruity tobacco. We then hit the marina strip of bars settling in the trendy bean bagged Shade bar for another drink or two then home time. Historical Traveler Reviews The Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh Hurghada
Just got back from a week at the Oberoi in Hurghada.
Just returned from a fab holiday at the Oberoi. We had a beachfront suite which really was right on the beach and meant not only did we have a private courtyard (as do all suites) but it was furnished with sunloungers which was a real bonus as there were times when we needed to get out of the near gale-force winds! The weather was very windy for 5/7 days which took the edge off the heat which was good for sunbathing but meant it felt a bit chilly in the pool and too windy to sit out at the poolside pergola bar. However when the wind dropped the place was idyllic - the sea was completely flat and you needed to go in the pool to cool off frequently.
Stayed at the Oberoi for a week with my wife and two chidren aged 20 and 18.On the whole we thought it was excellent with lovely rooms ,good staff and a good variety of food. The drawbacks were the weather which initally was very windy and as a result quite cool .This seems to be quite a regular problem and visitors should be careful when they go.The weather is far more seasonal than we expected.Secondly three of us dive which proved somewhat inconvenient. To elaborate, apart from the House reef, diving is from a boat which leaves from a neighbouring hotel. This means that all diving trips involve an 8.15 am pickup and a return at around 4.30.This might not suit everyone. Finally the location of the hotels leaves very limited opportunities for venturing out of the hotel. The Red Sea seems to be an area of rapid development ,with loads of new hotels being built to cater for the cheaper end of the market especially from Russia. Not surprisingly we all felt that the fragile beauty of the area was being wrecked by this.
Oberoi is fantastic
Just came back from a week in Hurghada, staying at the Oberoi and had a great time. the hotel is idyllic. We ate out one night at the Fish House in New Down town - it was a great meal and I fully recommend it. Got very chilly in the evenings though - lng sleeves recommended. The wind during the day also made it a bit cold after swimming. Overall a great week in the sun.
A Desert Oasis
This hotel is not right in Hurghada town but on the very edge which means a beautiful long stretch of beach to yourself and peace & quiet. The rooms are all suites and are spacious and beautifully decorated. The staff are friendly without being intrusive. The restaurants offer a good selection on the menu and are reasonably priced. The beach is wonderful and the house reef is fantastic for diving. Diving is reasonably priced and boat diving is only a 10min ride away, so no big deal. Dive sites are decided on the day depending on water conditions, nothing wrong with this as safety is always at the forefront. This is a fantastic standard of hotel which went over and above expectations.
I stayed at this resort for four nights during January 2005 and absolutely fell in love with the resort, the service and the food. Each suite is well maintained, comfortable, and has enough privacy to feel as if you've really gotten away. Each night, the turndown service was exceptional...our last night there, we found illuminated candles all over the suite, rose petals in the bed and in the filled bathtub...neither of us requested this amazing treatment, and is a perfect example of how this hotel goes over and above what is expected. The beaches are lovely, water is absolutely pristine, and on days that it was a bit windy, the beach attendant directed us to a protected area outside the wind. The food was very good, although the same breakfast (although delicious) was offered every day, the restaurant Tagan was excellent, and the alternate buffet was good, although not as spectacular as the other meals. Overall, I found my stay exceptional and I would go back in a heartbeat!
We stayed at the Oberoi at the end of August 2004 and were truly impressed. On our arrival we were greeted with refreshing towels and a cocktail and we felt straight away that we were being taken care of.
Very impressive property all rooms are junior suites except for a few Royal Suites which additionally have a good sized private pool.
Superb Hotel with excellent service and good snorkeling and diving
A superb hotel with excellent service, wonderful rooms and good food, which met all our expectations and more.
The snorkeling off the beach was excellent and the diving on the house reef was well organised by friendly and helpful staff from the pier. We did not go on a boat dive, which went from a nearby marina.
