      Madison to South Dakota

It's not much of an exaggeration to say that there's nothing across southern Minnesota. A lot of wind farms and corn fields followed by your casual slight left hand turn every 100 miles. The area near the Mississippi River was beautiful. Reminded me a lot of Vermont actually... After that though, nothing to write home about (or ...

We were warned about how desolate and flat it can seem when driving through states like Ohio, Indiana, and parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, and apparently just to torture ourselves, and test our mental stability, we hit them all in one day. ... the lead delivered by oxcart to the top of a cliff where he had paid for the digging of a shaft. The molten lead was scooped up in a ladle with shot size holes, the lead droplets were sent down the 175 foot shaft into a pool of water. Dropping down the shaft caused the molten lead shot to become spherical….hmmmmmhhh, never heard of that before, the things you learn on the road!

Another surprise was the House on the Rock. Never heard of it before either. Alex ...

... in my last T-shirt - the science un-friendly Metallica "Death Magnetic" with skulls to boot. This was not going to fly, I now HAD to get a shirt. Unlike Chicago, main street Madison was quaint, no malls or lights or chain stores, I went into a 2nd hand store and found a shirt for $8.50, finally the quest is over!

The conference started with a couple of lectures, and as soon as the lights went down I fell asleep, for ****'s ...
