Hot Springs and Lava

I finally made it to the hot springs in La Fortuna, and it was definitely worth the wait.. The place is straight up amazing.. I paid a good amount to get in, but it was absolutely worth every penny. There were over a dozen natural hot spring pools scattered out in the well built complex at Tabacon Grand Spa & Resort (http://www.tabacon.com/hot-springs).. After sitting at the swim up bar and sipping on a few beverages, a young man marinated in some really hot water for multple hours. I als...

Hot Springs, a Live Volcano and Pampering!

He Said: Highlights: 1.Getting to see the Volcano spew lava and molten rocks and then getting to see them explode into lava streams/trails after rolling quite a way down the Volcano's face. 2.The most amazing hot springs ever. It makes Banff and Fairmont look pretty lame. The hot pools are natural pools in the river as are the falls, the river is actually a flowing hot spring. Bonus, they are mineral pools without the high sulphur content. 3. The swim up bar. Salut! 4. A morning at the Spa, H...

Volcano!

Next stop, La Fortuna, at the base of the Arenal Volcano. It took three hours by 'jeep-boat-jeep' across the Arenal Lake to get to La Fortuna and the view of the volcano was spectacular, both from town and from the boat across the lake. Highlights - Probably one of the highlights of the whole trip: watching the red-hot rocks of lava spewing out of the volcano as night fell, and seeing them smash their way down the side of the vocano. Better than any fireworks display. Even Sky Fire. - The hot...

Costa Rica Travel Diary

First Night: Arrived late at night in San Jose. Stayed at the Hotel Alta about 20 minutes from San Jose in Escazu/Santa Ana area. Beautiful hotel, we wont be here for long. Getting picked up at 5:45 for the transfer to catch the boat to Tortuguero. Hotel is beautiful. My first cultural experience in Costa Rica: Watching the Simpsons in Spanish. My parents are hungry, so we take a cab ride to the closest town that still has a restaurant open at 10 at night. The restaurant is in a strip mall. I...

Arenal & La Fortuna

La Fortuna is a small town close to Volcan Arenal (Arenal Volcano). It is one of several small towns that thrive on the tourist life attracted by the volcano, the lake, and the hot springs. Arenal is on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, near the top of the mountain ranges, and the climate is essentially a rain forest. The drive from Monteverde to Arenal was yet another few hours through rough dirt roads, though not at bad as the one up to Monteverde. We´re staying at a resort called Tabacon Gra...

Flying through the forest

Well, the trip is coming to a close. We have a few days here in Costa Rica, and then its back to SF. We arrived late on Wednesday night, and rented a car to save time. We headed to La Fortuna that night late. It was a pretty drive, even with the fog. Thursday, we followed the Walker's itinerary, and did a hanging bridges walk in the am...where we got to see a SLOTH moving around, albeit really slowly. He was really cute. We also saw a blue jean frog (poisonous dart frog), a couple of squirrel...

... yourself to the forest. Although we didn't see nearly as much wildlife as in Manuel Antonio it was definately a cool experience. When we got back into town we decided to head over to the cheese factory and did a guided tour that explained the history of the town, the factory, how cheese is made and finally were treated to a sampling of there different cheeses. My favorite was the young cheese but just as interesting was the ...

Cooling off in the Mountains

... zip line canopy tour with 100% adrenaline adventures. This was incredible! They have 16 lines, a repelling line, and a Tarzan swing. The whole adventure took over 3 hours and was a lot of fun. (The student rate is $27 bucks and if you stay at sleepers Ronnie, the owner, will give you that rate even if you are not a student) The first few zip lines were short and easy but they quickly got faster and longer. The last one is 1500 feet long and ...
