We took advantage of the three hour free walking tour of Budapest this morning. Great to see all the sights and learn some background history. The only downside was the sweltering heat! We started at St Stephen's (first king of Hungary) church on the Pest side and ended up at the Royal Palace on the Buda side. The Chain Bridge connects Buda and Pest which are separated by the ...

... when we’d walked past it a few days earlier, and when returning that night to try it out, discovered it was only open for lunch. So we returned on our last day and had our best Budapest meal by far. If the speech was particularly good, the joke was that it was worth a ...

Today we decided to wander along the waterfront on the Buda side, as we hadn't spent much time along there yet. We walked up to the Parliament on the Pest side, where the city is putting up a new monument on the one side. Then we hopped on the Metro 2, travelled under the river and got off at the next stop. We wanted to go into the church right next to the transit hub but it was closed, so I had to content myself ...

The plan for today was to explore the Jewish quarter, including the Great Synagogue, the largest inEurope and second largest in the world. After our usual hearty breakfast of yoghurt and musli, cold cuts, cheese, liver wurst and bread, we were off. I was surprised how close the Jewish Quarter was- I don't remember having been there before but I was younger so I could be wrong... We found the huge synagogue with ease but what do you know, it was a Jewish high holiday on the ...
