Atupa Rarotonga, Southern Cook Islands, Cook Islands, 682-28028
Our Shuttle picked us up at noon to take us to the airport. We fly to Auckland, have a short stop over then fly Air New Zealand to Rarotonga, capital of the Cook Islands. Once again we arrive an hour late (11:30 p.m.). The air is still hot and humid, and we are very happy to see our shuttle driver (Kimi) waiting patiently for us. Even at this time of night we receive a warm welcome. A Cook Islander is playing the ukulele and we are given a lei greeting (fragrant frangipani flowers). It is a s...
Avarua,Rarotonga Cook Islands, Cook Islands indianajillWe are starting to settle into island pace, not too fast. After a leisurely breakfast we are picked up for our Circle Island Tour. Having been around the island ourselves we are pleasantly surprised that it turns out to be an excellent tour. Our guide takes us on the same circular route that we had already traveled but he points out various sights of interest before taking us by past taro plantations, papaya fields and up into the hills to discover the island's ancient maraes (temples). I am ...
Avarua, Cook Islands indianajillMonday onwards Monday we set off on our scooter to explore the island. We have mobility and we intend to use it. Al is now feeling confident on the scooter and today I do much better as well. By afternoon I am holding on with only one hand, and my other hand is nowhere near Al's neck! I am wearing sturdy shoes, a long sleeved cotton blouse and my hat - I feel much better prepared to be on a bike. It is still not smooth sailing - hazards are everywhere, potholes, dogs, roosters, and even three...

... it. Seeing how calm the bus driver was just makes the case even stronger.

We picked up some school kids on the way back. The first little guy to get on was really tiny. Don’t think he had any money. The bus driver wanted to know where his mum was so she could work out where to drop him off. Not sure she could get anything out of him so when all the other kids had got on she asked back down the bus “Where’s the boy in red going ...
Rarotonga, Southern Cook Islands, Cook Islands aussiepanda... br>
We walked - why swim when you can walk? - right across the lagoon to the motu across from the pole house. It never got over our shoulders although I was on tippy toes a couple of times. The water varied between Thailand-warm and everywhere else warm. Was great fun. Was fantastic to have a camera we weren’t concerned about getting wet.

When we’d morphed into giant prunes (Al was only medium sized) we realised ...
Rarotonga, Southern Cook Islands, Cook Islands aussiepanda... in full technicolour ending only yards away from our balcony - unfortunately the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, was oh so close, but oh so far! After the usual trip to the gym and breakfast we made a decision that it was too damp and blustery to enjoy sitting on the Spa deck and instead returned to our cabin. The entertainment provided by the ship today was once again sadly lacking ...
At Sea, Society Islands, Cook Islands nickelaine... get outta there, and team Doug-Colleen-Peggy-Q did manage to accomplish a great deal despite the adversity. VOLUNTEERS STRUGGLE THROUGH THE HARDSHIPS OF SWIMMING LESSONS: Te Uki Ou School has a progressive athletic program for its students, which involves the aforementioned vaka paddling. It also includes swimming lessons, and Stephanie and I earned the titles of "swimming instructors" last week. The island bus picks up the 5-9 year old clan at the school and hops ...
Avarua, Southern Cook Islands, Cook Islands qgirl128... t bothered by the lack of visibility. The area is quite shallow and there are some places where you can stand even with a high tide like we had. Lots of colourful reef fish are obviously not scared of people. This is a protected marine area, which is probably why there are so many fish - we were told the locals can't eat the fish here! After getting rather sun burned we headed for home with a small detour to another dive shop that we'd seen on the bus ...
Rarotonga, Southern Cook Islands, Cook Islands nadinekarl... spent a pleasant hour or two lounging by the pool trying unsuccessfully to read and not doze off. In the afternoon we enjoyed an amusing movie- 'License to Wed' starring Robyn Williams. The show tonight called 'Save the last dance' was the first production by the Princess entertainers. What an energetic bunch of young people they are, and how polished a performance of song and dance they entertained us with. The only problem we have with these shows is that the theatre holds about ...
