So, I'm not a water person

Yesterday was another big day for me. I tried scuba. Since the snorkeling thing was a bit of a challenge I opted to take a 'resort diver' course which is a one day, basics and a dive course then you have the option to take two more days to get your ticket. Anyway we went to the Belize Dive shop and watched a 20 minute video about the basics of breathing, removing and replacing your air thingy, hand signals and the basic how to's. After that I was nervous, then we took a boat out and got into ...

We made it!

... min boat ride to the island. There was a couple there with a cute little baby that had been on our last 2 flights. Made friends. They live in Denver.( Lindsay and Ashley, you have a dinner invitation from them :-). Any way it was getting dark as we arrived so we got our room grabbed some dinner and crashed. The next morning we got locked out of our safe and we met our Neighbors, Doug and Coleen. They told us the combo and tried to get it open ...

Arrive in San Pedro

... drinks... got caught up on some of the changes in the island and news from back home (they're from Calgary, originally) before it was time for me to push off - much eariler than you'd expect, I'm sure. After such a short sleep the night before, I was both hungry and exhausted (and of course by then, just a little tipsy). I walked back down the beach to Fido's where I had a so-so dinner of conch fritters and caesar salad before picking up a few supplies for ...

... onto the island to see the Red- footed Boobies and the Frigate Birds which nest on the island. The Frigate birds were putting on a fantasitc display puffing up huge red air balloons under their beaks which they do to attract the females.
We dived just off the island - there were a lot more fish to be seen but Chris had the best sighting seeing a shark whilst snorkelling!!
We then went for another dive at a place known as the Aquarium, which ...

In the middle of the ocean

... forming almost one complete silver picture. However, the real highlights came later. At shark-ray alley, we saw nurse sharks (some of them not so innocent looking at over 6 feet!). Our guide told us the worst they could do was give you a really bad hickey, but I wasn´t about to try and touch them anyway. Later we saw manta rays that glided through the water like birds, and also green sea turtles (maybe the highlight of my ...

Caye Caulker - a good place to chillax mon

... for our drinks, I know we're on Island time but this is ridiculous. We soon give up and head to a local Italian restaurant to finish our evening. Awoken at 1am with gale force winds, torrential rain capped off with thunder and lightening I'm thinking our diving trip tomorrow out to the Blue Hole may be cancelled. Still we set off down to the boat ramp at 5.30am and we're amazed that the locals are all relaxed and we're still heading out. Everything is fine until we get to the ...

... the boat for the 2 hour journey out to the reef. 60 miles off shore these boats are rapid with three 200hp outboards on the back. Anchored up, we had our dive briefing. The dive was deep at 42m, and as such nitrogen narcosis, a feeling likened to being drunk, was a possibility; we were reminded that it would be a bad idea to take our regulators out of our mouths to give them to the fish - rational thought depletes at ...

Chilling in Caye Caulker, Belize

... Caulker. I was in CC 8 years ago and it has grown a lot with more hotels/hostels and bars but still retains its charm. I met a mad englishman on the boat and we proceeded to have a fine old time. After too many early mornings and nights in Guatemala it was a welcome relief to be out dancing and singing until the wee small hours. Sadly cos we did so much diving we were also up in the morning as well but it felt more normal to me (phew i am no ...

Viva Carnaval!

... would finish the song, advance about 50 feet, throw an extension cord from the truck to a nearby building to get power, and start the whole thing over again. It was a riot! Meanwhile, paint was still being spread around on anyone standing still. This time we willingly submitted to the face painting as everyone was getting into the act. So went our first night in Belize. I'm not sure the rest of our trip will be able to live up to the first 4 hours!

The Great Blue Hole: the dive of my life!!!

... 31 to 25 in a minute, like taking a cold shower after a hot one. Down, down, down. The colors get vague and then: almost disappear. It gets colder. And darker. Breathing gets harder. While till 30 meters: breathing through a regulator is almost the same as breathing normally, for an experienced diver, below 40, you need to s.ck your air in. It feels like breathing through a straw: difficult to get enough air. And then the diving master goes ...
