Krabi Ao-Nang - 4 Days

Day 7 - In transit to Krabi Had breakfast locally and took a taxi to the airport. They have two, the international one and the regional one. Our's was the international one, though we were on a regional flight (confusing - always worth checking the tickets). Bought a couple of little gifts from the airport shops and boarded our 'AirAsia' flight to Krabi (about an hour). When we arrived we selected the 'express bus' to get to our destination ("ao nang"). This was half the price of a taxi but w...

... but not really worth it yet (1 day travel, 3 days there, 1 day travel to Southern border). Bangkok comes later!
Somewhat annoyed with myself for essentially wasting days 4 and 5 (and some money), I decided to punish myself...by booking a full day of action for the sixth day, involving whitewater rafting, cruising around on ATV's, swimming in a waterfall and visiting a Temple. I am ******* myself, I know.
Day 6 (4 and 5 were uneventful):

I wondered if that was due to his Buddhist background or the opennes of Thai culture. Perhaps a combination of both, who knows, I don't think I could ever really figure it all out.

The next day we had to wake up extra early again to catch a flight back to Bangkok from Surat Thani, a town 80 kilometers away. I remember Tom waking up and coming ...

... very nice, but asked me, as many other Europeans had, if we were raised, as Americans, to believe the US was so great and powerful. I was sick of this idea bestowed upon us from who knows where from this youth; their parents, school, the media.... I told him he needed to discover that for himself, especially of his large interest to travel in the US eventually. I was educated and raised to think for myself and taught in a way that things were as they were, and ...

My first impressions of Krabi

Krabi, 07-02-2009. Krabi is quite a busy affair these days, small budget hostels where a weary backpack traveller can rest and sleep untill the ferry to Kho Phi-Phi will depart, cozy restaurants serve sweet pancakes for breakfast while long-tail boat owners approach any Farang face looking for business. The universal power of money even in mystical Thailand!!! Despite the sheer number of Farang in Krabi, the place is still laid-back, no girly ...

Our time in Thailand is running out fast. The visa runs to the 20th April and we're eager to make the most of the last few days. In Ko Lanta, the weather is good and we hit the beach, again. To be honest we're really beached-out now, luckily Lanta has a few other places of interest like the old town. We hired a moped again as the beaches get more quiet and secluded the ...

... buckets) could be a little troublesome if not careful. We didn't get back to our island until 6am where we were dropped off at McDonald's for a quick breakfast before heading off to another island. After a long night and no sleep we arrived at Koh Phi Phi (pronounced Pee Pee) which is a very touristy island so a little more pricey. This is where I celebrated my birthday! We started off the day with an island hopping tour and some snorkeling which was pretty fun. The beaches are ...

... into the turquoise sea makes it worth it. We spent a few days here immersing ourselves with the aid of snorkels into the unbelievable world of coral reefs which sadly was affected noticeably by the tsunami. I had my first run-in with a shark around the bend of a reef: a heart-stopping experience even if the shark in question was about half my size and fled after it saw me. Then again the dangers here are of a more insidious and less obvious type: the corals ...

Staying outside of Ao Nang at the Sheraton it was a big disappointment after Khao Lak. The beach had a lot of coral, which is all right except that mixed in with the coral you ...
