We hopped the 9:45 San Pedro Express to Ambergris Caye, the much larger island a 1/2 hour boat ride away.
First impression . . . they have beaches! So many more docks, dive boats/water excursions and lots of beach vendors. Beautiful blankets, bags, etc. Too bad we don't have room ...
... although the current was very strong and pulled us back towards the beach so it was quite a workout if you wanted to do any swimming!
For our evening meal we went to a restaurant with no menu. Instead they presented us with a selection of freshly caught fish and seafood which they then barbecued. Simple and delicious.
It was an early start the next morning as we were travelling back to Mexico, but what a way to end our trip in Belize!
... Once we ariived, we followed the advise of a local we met on the water taxi and went to Ruby's Budget Hotel right on the beach. For $20 we got our cheapest room yet, with an extraordinary view. We took time this evening to check out the town, book a final lobster/fishing/snorkeling trip for Friday, and find a local hangout to get a beer and smoothy and watch the world cup. ... tax. What awaited us at the dock was something else. We were placed in a boat, given a huge black plastic sheet of which we could only imagine what was for... Once underway we had one job. Survive by not drowning. Plastic doesn’t breathe so we had to work out a balance between wrapping ourselves in it to prevent being drenched by the spray and sweating profusely beneath it. Tricky balance. ..
