Day 19: Petra

Before breakfast we stop by the front desk and the same man who we had helped us late last night (he works very long hours), asks if everything is OK with our room. We tell him about the toilet and he says, "no problem"; just leave our bags and while we are touring today, he will make sure we have a very nice room when we return. Every staff person at this hotel has been friendly, professional and helpful. It's a pleasure. We go to breakfast, which is a large plentiful quality buffet of both ...

Day 18: Wadi Rum, Petra by Candlelight

We stumble out of our tents early so we can see the sun rise in Wadi Rum. There is a slight chill in the air as we walk just a little ways out of camp. We stop to listen to the silence and watch the light wash over the sand and mountains. It is beautiful. I'm feeling so much better this morning! We have some really good photos of this new day! We walk over to the resident camel and try to get to know it. He seems more interested in any food we might have in our hands and when there isn't any,...

Desert of Petra

Pre-Trip Itinerary: Dubai-Petra, Jordan (4 hour flight) Board your private jet this morning for your flight to Aqaba, Jordan's southernmost city. Lunch is served during the flight. On arrival, you continue by road to Wadi Rum, where T.E. Lawrence ("of Arabia") lived with his Bedouin friends and allies during World War I. The area takes its name from the largest and grandest of the whole network of wadis, meaning valleys, and is often called the "Valley of the Moon." The wadi is still home to ...

Petra Baby!

... seem that bad. However, after we climbed the 1 hour trail up to the monastery, we forked out about 10 CDN for a coke and an ice tea...fully worth it though in the midday heat!! I like Jordan so far. Of course, we have spent most of our time in areas away from society here. I did almost lose my sunglasses though, but local workers found them and gladly held on to them until I returned looking for them where I last had them, free of charge nonetheless ...

Wadi Musa and Petra

Left Amman and headed for Madaba and Mt Nebo. At Madaba I visited an old Greek Orthodox church where there is a mosaic on the floor featuring a map of the old holy land. Then drove to the top of Mt Nebo and stood where Moses was said to have been shown the promised land. You can see Jerusalem and jericho as well as the Dead Sea from the top. Then drove to Wadi Musa to ...

Rose-Red City

... you walk through a beautiful siq (which looks like a canyon, but is actually one block of rock shoved apart) for over 1 km. You have 200 m rock walls towering over you and sometimes the walls are only a few metres apart. Finally you come around a curve and catch your first look at the Treasury. It is the most famous building in Petra, the best preserved and it really is breath-taking. It was built as a tomb but apparently ...

Petra: the highlight of our trip

... copper refining, and of course stone carving. Out of the "rose stone" the Nabataeans carved enormous structures and tombs. With so many different influences from all the trade business, they carved and decorated these structures with Classical Graeco-Roman motifs such as pediments and Corinthian columns but would also use Egyptian obelisks in the decoration as well. Earthquakes and eventual domination by the Roman Empire in 106 AD ...

Petra wonder of the world is amazing!

... killing me after walking for 5 hours. Petra itself has more sights that I imagined and it was awsome just walking around and seeing it all, all the litte caves in the rock and the grand buildings carved into the rocks. I am going back tomorrow to do more sightseeing. Again like Wadi Rum it is hard to describe it but you should defiantly see the photos as some of them are good and gives you a general idea of it. I am off now to eat a 4 Dina all you can eat salad an

I wrote and send countless romantic messages to women I never met for friends who can not read or write English, but want to stay in touch with their "girlfriends". I spend many evenings learning Arabic. I am doing pretty well with reading and writing already, and slowly my vocabulary starts to grow. Anyone wants advice on how to best learn a ...

Looing for Petra
