Samoan bus system (and hierarchy)

... usually sit in the back. Typically, but not strictly. And if it's obvious you are a tourist, locals will give up their front seats for you, sometimes before you even get on the bus---regardless of your age or gender. For them, you are a "guest" in their country so they must offer you a good seat.

The bus starts getting interesting once it starts getting crowded. Technically, a bus is not supposed to have people standing in the aisles. Typically ...

I love my beach fale (fah-lay)!

... to spend for a taxi, walk for a long time, or take a chance on one of the unknown-schedule buses to find a restaurant. However, most buses stop running by 4pm. Thus, if you are able to catch a bus, you may not catch a bus trying to get back to your accomodations. So it works out that these resorts provide breakfast and dinner as part of your stay.

One of the memorable aspects of Tanu Beach Fales is the speech the owners give ...

Becky and Lucky's great excuse for a getaway

... Samoan style. There was alot of coconut, taro and fish. We also had rice every night. Breakfast consisted of fresh fruit and toast and a few other things.

We went swimming with the turtles - it was more fun feeding them from the edges than swimming in the pond with them as it was pretty murky. The women's handicraft stall was also really good (didn't have any trouble with getting stuff through customs). The buses that operate in Samoa are hilarious -they ...

Tuesday - Day 2

... a little bit of getting used to. As you can imagine we passed plenty of households. The houses in Samoa are called a fale (far-lay), which to the untrained eye simply resembles a couple of poles supporting a roof. As western culture permeates the society, the fale's are being superseded by western styled housing. The fale is now a place to socialise, but still a reminder of ...

Deep Fried Paradise: Savai'i Island

... up like a shot and snap on the light, thinking it might be my water bottle or the raining dripping into my fale and ruining my writing. As the light flickers on, barely illuminating anything, I see that nothing's wet. Ticktickticktickticktick. Okay. It's definitely not liquid, whatever that sound is. I stand up, stooping a bit and try to locate where it's coming from. There. Holding my breath, I stand still and wait. Tickticktickticktickticktickticktick ...

Stranded in Samoa: Upolu Island

... veggie goodness high on our plates. Take THAT deep-fried-EVERYTHING-induced scurvy! Roughage never tasted so sweet. Highlights of Upolu Island were skinny dipping in the ocean under the most brilliant bed of stars I've ever seen and, on our last night, laying in the sand talking about The Meaning of Life and seeing not just one, but two (!!)shooting stars travel clear across the sky, making me gasp and squeeze my eyes shut tight... ...I wish I may...I wish I might... xox K

Samoa, land of smiles

RL Stevenson's Tomb and the Baha'i Temple

Last Saturday we took a little trip to Vailima to visit the Robert Louis Tomb and Museum. We took a cab to the Museum and realized it was a bit expensive to have a look inside so we started walking up the mountain to see the tomb instead. There was a short and along walkway up to the top, after seeing the angle of the short one we chose the longer less uphill one . Since it had bee raining quite a ...
