Perhantian Island

Took a speedboat from Kuala Besut to the Perhantian and stayed on Pulau Perhentian Kecil which is the smaller island. A few days were spent at Sha-La Resort which cost 200MR per night for a bungalow including breakfast. We chose this island because we could go snorkeling from the beach which was great. A 10 minute walk brought us to the lovely beach at Long island beach. The three days spent here were great and Shari-La also seems to be the best accomodations on this island. The speed boat fr...

Beware of Sharks on Land

When I look back, I see that the fiasco that characterized the departure from KL into Pulau Perhentian is pretty much a foreshadowing of what was to come on the islands.

I remember waking up excited to leave KL for Pulau Perhentian. From what I heard, these islands were absolute paradise. Our plan was to fly over to Kota Bharu (which is a 55 minute flight) and take a taxi over to Kuala Besut and then take a fast boat over to the islands. We left KL at 8:00 AM and arrived to the airpor...

Please sir can we have some more!!

Alison: The journey to the Perhentian Islands was another uncomfortable affair. The tiny minibus came to collect us at 5am and we managed to squeeze on to what already appeared to be a full bus. Following our pick up though, the driver still managed to get another 2people on!! Luckily we weren't on the back row because these people had to ride with giant rucksacks rather unexpectedly falling on their head! We finally got to a small town called Kuala Besut after 6 hours and prepared for our sp...

Arrival at the Perhentian Islands and a reunion

... This done, Taman Negara people got into one bus, while Perhentian people got into another. An Irish girl - Trisha - was now in my bus, and we got chatting. We were getting on quite well on our way to Kuala Besut (in stark contrast to a few days later when I decided that she was bloody annoying), so we decided to share a room when we got to Perhentian Kecil and save ourselves some money. Once at Kuala Besut, the two of us were shepherded off to a ...

... worried that we would both grow gills and scales!

The only slight disappointment was the coral, although it was an official marine park the coral was in a bad way in many places – unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a culture of conservation. Our Malaysian next door neighbour explained that the coral was much better on his last visit 5 years ago and he thought that locals were selling it – we later saw him (and others) putting corals in his ...

Dan turns 22 in Paradise

... dark at night is a bit tricky, especially as there aren't any proper roads just tiny tracks overgrown with grass where the dinosaurs live. I lost my faithful flip flops to the tracks one night, gutted.
Snorkeling here is awesome, the water is absolutely crystal clear and the coral is amazing and some of the fish are huge. We pretty much went snorkeling everyday, which has helped the ...

A random few days of easy living

I hadn’t intended to visit the Perhentians - despite being told they were absurdly beautiful I felt I’d had my fill of beaches and wanted to head on down to KL. However, a moment of reckless spontaneity sidetracked me from this plan. At around midnight, sitting on the social couches at Daniel’s Lodge, my Belgian buddy Bert and his two German comrades were discussing an audacious plot to leave at 4am on a mission to the beach. The laughs were flowing ...

Pulau Perhentian Kecil - Could this be paradise?

... vomiting we settled on Panorama which was a little pricey but did include a free meal. Though we still had cold water and frequent visits from the lizards the room was quite nice and the food was the best we've had in all SE Asia. The lizards in the room were nothing compared to the Monitor Lizards that stalked the surrounding area. We were sat watching Seinfeld on the Ipod when I caught out of the corner of my eye a 4 foot long beast crawl from ...

Relaxing in Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia

... we were having such a nice chalet to come back to while the villagers which we have just seen were living in shacks.

We only stayed for 2 nights at Perhentian Island and that, for us, was just nice. If we had stayed any longer, we would have nothing to do but for me to finish another book and for Argi to join a few more diving trips.

We would only recommend Pulau Perhentian Kecil for some rest and relaxation but nothing more.
