Leaving Vietnam, we hopped a flight back to Kuala Lumpur, then transferred to Penang, an island north west of KL. Driving from the airport to our resort on the north coast at Batu Feringghi, we passed countless high rise apartment blocks, and countless more under development. It was a pretty grim looking vista, and we questioned our decision to go …

... delicacies. I was lucky enough to have a Chinese man help me and describe what everything was and what they tasted like. I was afraid of the salted egg pastry but it actually wasn't bad, salty and sweet. But the best was the Trishaw Egg Custard! Very light and flaky pastry with what seemed like hundreds of layers all holding a warm gooey egg custard that was dreamy! I also managed to take a wrong turn around an open plan lot looking for ...

... Yin, The Goddess of Mercy. Like I said very impressive and different to anything we are used to. There are plenty of little shops on the way up which have some good souvenirs in them. We spent around an hour an a half there which is plenty in the heat. The only regret is that we didn't get a tour guide so we could understand a bit more about it. Saying that, a tour guide cost more than our daily budget so it was out of the question anyway. We would highly recommend this if ...

... Chin Lam than meets the eye. Whilst at one moment informing us that he has difficulty with his night-time vision (whilst speeding us through the darkened backstreets of penang in a 1970s Mercedes with no seat belts in the back...and certainly no airbags to think of), the next moment he is setting off down the shops on his motorcycle, which he uses to run his errands around town and take himself to badminton (which he plays three times per week).
