Today was a day of contrasts: we visited a 1000 year old garden and I went pearl shopping.

We arrived in Suzhou under half hour and were immediately enveloped in a smog of dust and smell of chemicals. Coming out of the train station I felt the air was filled with heavy smoke. Vicky, our guide, said that for all its ancient beauty, the town is also an industrial center with several manufacturing factories emitting toxic waste in the environment.

Back to the hotel after for a big surprise. The whole group sitting round waiting for me with a birthday cake and candles. They all sang and it was very embarrassing.
