Catch-Up Day

Not much to tell about Roseburg and our stay here, although it is a nice little town and the back balcony of our room looked out over the Umpqua River, with accompanying ducks and interesting birds of a sort we don't see in Alabama.  We needed to wash clothes and gather our wits before driving to Crater Lake, Mt. Shasta, and into California -- so Roseburg is it.

Day 1 Going to Vancouver Island

... there is daily fog, their roots only go down about 12 inches and they get their water from the moisture in the air (i.e. fog). They are fast growing trees and need a lot of water. By the time the Redwoods dissapeared, the temperature skyrocketed. There was no cold, wet wind so the sun could do its job and heat everything up including me! I was on the side of the road taking off my thermal underwear ...

Castle Rock to Canyonville

... now hooked up with our friends and we are going to travel in a caravan (three coaches and one car) to our next destination which we expect to be Corning, California. We are going to stay at Rolling Hills RV Park which is attached to a casino. The reason for some of this apparent urgency is that the weather is good and we want to get through the mountain passes in the Siskiyou's as there is no snow. Will write again from our next destination.

Long drive up

... mountain of Mount Shasta. By that time we were already almost 10 hours on the road, but since it was only about 3:30 at that stage we decided to push on, and make this day a really long trip - while tomorrow will then be much easier. We pushed through to Roseburg in Oregon - 12 hours later we are sitting in a road side inn, exhausted, and glad that tomorrow's trip will be much easier, and shorter too Seattle.

... farmland. One of the joys of riding a motorcycle is the fact that you're much more a part of your environment instead of passing through it in an insulated bubble. The varying smells of forest and field add to the enjoyment of the ride. Soon I'm exiting the freeway at Roseburg, winding my way through town and following a road that parallels a stream to my cousins Larry and Marie who live on the top of a hill outside town. Their ...

Planning and waiting....

Well, we are gearing up for this summer's adventure early..... Its a whole 5 months before we depart, but as the boy scouts say " Be Prepared". We have our airline tickets locked down and the dates are set! I have been reading travel books galore, as well as travel blogs, web-sites and maps. There is so much to see in Vietnam, our ...

Day 9: Bend to Roseburg, Oregon

... through Bend (see picture). Ann rafted down it during her summer in the Northwest in '96. No winner, participation was down, but we are hoping for some renewed interest. Answer to bonus question from yesterday: Kansas. So said a roadside sign. Probably has something to do with Eisenhower. We awoke to a great day in Bend, found a quirky coffee shop for Ann, had breakfast in a park and left south. Since this was a National Park-centric day, Paul will ...

A Magical Visit to Merlin!

We arrived at the home of our old Cargill friends, Charlie and Beth, in Merlin, Oregon this afternoon. They're the first people I ever knew who went full time in a motorhome - back in 1986! They've since settled back into this beautiful "stick and brick" home near the tiny town of Merlin ...

... Redwoods and along seal strewn shores. We could't believe their size. In Vietnam an extended family could happily have lived in one and still have room to spare! Our favourite however was an RV that was so big it actually had a truck rig to pull it and the driver couldn't have been a day under 75! I must confess I now have quite a hankering after one but every time we drive past a sales yard Phil speeds up! Once we get home I may do some investigating as I think this could be the future!
