Kamphaeng Phet: The Farang Experience

... soaking in the thai-ness of it all. It was wonderful and interesting, but I was afraid if I wandered too far I would get lost (especially as my map didn't have street names!)...so I went back. I need to develop a sense of direction. In the evening our little farang crew got together again to tackle the night market with a few beer Changs. The perfect way to end my time in Kampaeng Phet...as wonderful as it was, it makes me nervous after a while to have such a ...

Surprise hosts

... it was like to "live" in Thailand. We went to church for a Christmas service, and visited the local ruins and shared a couple of home cooked meals and good conversation with our new friends. Soon, it was time to head north. We were thankful for the generosity that we found in this off the beaten track town in Thailand and will look back fondly at the short time spent with our unexpected friends.

Can't say it, but it's spelled "Kamphaeng Phet"

... would come out somewhere at the top of the ranking. The sights in KP are also quite splendid. Similar to the wats (temples) in Sukhothai though in a more developed state of decay, the Historical Park gives off the impression of a mix of buddhist art with the sculpting style of Giacometti. Somehow the laterite used in these constructions seems less resistant to the effects of weather than the building ...

... what they were so unhappy about, they got it for free! Ayuthaya My guest house is called Moradok Thai, and for anyone ever coming here, i would seriously recommend it. It an old wooden structure set amongst palm trees, various plants and animals, and has a very secluded, atmospheric feel to it, like being in the jungle. Then there's the people, who are practically like family now, and after two days there, i;ve promised I ...

... and grab dinner. We found a little market for dinner and Sebastian and I had four of the smallest hambergers you have ever seen...it was like eating at a mini-White Castle for elves. I'm going to have to go ahead and make myself Harold, and Sebastain, Kumar...only our night didn't end with a chance run in with a horny Neil Patrick Harris and a cheetah ride. Does anyone else miss Doogie Houser, MD??? .....yea, I don't either. So, let me tell you about new Sukhothai...how ...

The Ancient Capital

... It'd be good for you, I promise. Upon arriving, we settled into a lovely guest house that had several bungalows in which people could stay. Almost like a tree house, with a bathroom. After cleaning ourselves up, we walked about the town known as New Sukhothai. It's new because the Old Sukhothai refers to the ancient capital that now lies in ruins, which I will get to later. New Sukhothai, for lack of a better word, is a slum. Now ...

Slowing down in Kampheng Phet

... the boundaries of safe health practices, we swam in the waterfall, which was a nice way to cool off. All in all a very nice day and a good change of pace from all the ruins. Soon after arrival back at the guesthouse, I discovered another traveler who I'd met in Sukhothai was staying here as well. Less than a week in Thailand and I'm already bumping into people I know. Going to stick around here another day, so I may have more to add to this one later on.
