Bay of Islands Trip

For our 1st wedding anniversay we decided to visit the Bay of Islands about 5 hours drive north from Auckland. We set off about noon, but on the way Sally wanted to pass through a giant Kaori Forrest (Huge forrest - Maori name) about 2 hours west of the Bay of Islands. On the way we stopped briefly at a little village on the sea called Snell and admired the properties sitting on the beach - would be great to retire soemplace like that! We drove through beautiful countryside and through specta...

Auckland to Russell via Whangarei Falls

Sure, jet lag can slow you down a bit. We were asleep by 9:00 and awoke after a wonderful sleep at....3:30am. Time to get the day moving, we were on the road by 5:30. After a fine breakfast along Highway 1, we stopped on the Pacific beach (East side of the North Island) at Mangawhai Beach. Later on, we stopped at Whangarei Falls; lovely. The sign said a 35 minute "Track" (walk) by the river was available so off we went along the lovely river. Problem was, the track soon turned to mud and then...

What goes up...

After sleeping well (we're still surprised at that), I was still up in time for sunrise on the Bay of Islands. The world's largest breakfast was followed by a trip to Okiato, back on the car ferry to Opua, then to Paihai and finally to the Kerikeri Airport. It was skydiving time. Debi didn't want to so she didn't. There's not much to it really. You just sign a form that says that they're not responsible if you die. My confidence was very high when they said I wouldn't have to pay until after ...

Friday Night in the Bay of Islands

Hello everyone, Thanks for your notes. It is good to hear from folks. Tonight I will try to add some photos. Yesterday ( Thursday the 26th) we finally picked up our new home away from home - an orange van called a Spaceship. It is well equipped and has some really smart features such as hidden storage compartments. We headed out of Auckland and Mike readjusted to driving from the right side. The windshield ...

Kayaking with a Canadian in New Zealand

... and eventually we found it.  Thankfully, walking up the tall grass and bush route to the top of the small mountain we were in New Zealand, which has basically no deadly creepies or crawlies.  We weren't attacked and we found the view from the top to be unbelievable and completely worth the journey it took to get there.  We looked out over the white beaches of Rangaunu Bay and Cape Karikari and saw the Maturoa Island ...

10.18pm - Fallin'

... somehow ended up with a Nissan Sunny from Scottie's. Stupid comparison website, it confuzzled me. The car is fine, though it sort of drives me crazy at the same time, no pun intended. It's an automatic, for a start, which would be great if - and only if - I were to find myself in lots and lots of traffic jams. That is the only time during my driving career I have ever craved an automatic, when I've been sat in traffic (usually, strangely enough ...

Parley and Me

... belonged to 30 year-old me and not a six year-old. In any event, we arrived in cold and rainy Auckland, and were depressed to find out that the forecast was endless days of rain and overcast days. However, we were thrilled when we set out the next day and it was sunny on our drive to Paihia in the northern part of the North Island. We were even more thrilled at our luck when we stopped for breakfast and met a woman from South Africa who said it was the first ...

... Auckland. Friday unfortunately I had to say goodbye to Allana - it is going to be so weird travelling without her now even though it was only a week it was so nice to see a face from home after almost 4 months away! Saturday and Sunday were just spent chilling back at Andy's place and getting myself organised for exploring the rest of the North Island before I head back up here to watch the England/All Blacks match next month :) Hope you are all well. lots of love Elo x x x

Northland

The long trip north.... We waved goodbye to Auckland fairly early to start the fairly long drive into northland. First stop was a small town called Warkworth, where I'd considered jumping off to explore the Kauri forest located there; one of the last dense populations of these magnificent trees left in NZ. But getting carried away with the spirit of the Kiwi Experience (ahem), I stayed on and we motored through. En route we were 'encouraged' to select an activity to ...

Day 117 - Russell (Bay of Islands)

... because the clouds cleared again, and we all laid back and did some first class sun-bathing, which was - as you can imagine - EXTREMELY tiring ;)

Oh give me a break, I did make the effort to take some photos as we made our way back to port!

Mike and his family sail around the world each ...
