Up at 04:30 to head out to Angkor Wat for sunrise - a much better experience than the sunset but still amazed at the hordes of people all trying to do the same thing at the same time. Difficult to enjoy a spiritual experience when it is so hectic. Stumbled across the causeway in the dark & took up positions inside the temple complex as the sun rose. After a bit more exploration of the site we headed back to the hotel for breakfast. Regrouped, then back to Angkor Thom for intensive sightse...
Siem Reap, Cambodia traveltragicDay one: Mekong River and the Origin of Fish Sauce What an incredible first day. We landed on the Siem Reap airport tarmac at about 2pm local time, and already you could feel the heat emanating from the outside air. It wass only about 85 degrees, but compared to what I've been used to for years (New Haven, New York, Boston, San Francisco), it's definitely hot. The airport didn't appear to have any terminals - all the plans were lined up next to the reception building and people deplaned via m...

... of the population is under the age of 20 due to the years of genocide)
- There is no problem of overpopulation here like in China or in India (for eg. compared to VN, it is half the size and it has only about 1/6 of the population). As a result, there is less traffic, less dirt, less pollution, etc.
- The VNese kicked out the Khmer Rouge in 1979 - yay to my people! - and helped get Cambodia get back on track. The Cambodian people seem to acknowledge ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia bebabui... Keiren and I finally reach Siem Reap in a taxi (yes we started off in a bus, don't ask), by this point we are already $30 extra lighter from a Visa scam and an extra $15 lighter from a taxi scam and very, very tired. So.. Meester Taxi driver pulls up at a stop outside Siem Reap (despite us telling him where to take us) where a set of vulture tuk tuk drivers lay in wait for scam number three which involves getting ...
Siem Reap, KH.16, Cambodia john.boyd.123... back in the day but now they are just a good photo op. There are a ton of temples and sights contained in Angkor Thom and I visited the following: Bayon, Baphuon, Terrace of the Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King. I was there for much of the morning under a blistering sun.

First up was Bayon, which was really impressive. It has over 30 towers and each one has some of those same faces in each of the four directions. There are also extensive ...

Siem Reap, Cambodia stilllooking... the kids would run out to wave to us as we passed by on the bikes, it was so cute! On the way we stopped off at an orphanage that was sponsered by the Quad company to spend time with the kids. Also, at the beginning of the trip there was a bit of an accident with 2 young french teenagers that we're rinding together, apparently the driver looked behind to see his dad & mom & they ended up flying into a river at the side of the ...

It is the first country I've ever seen that didn't have a McDonalds (even Fiji and Malaysia had a few).

I arrived at the hostel and arranged for my moto driver to pick me up at 5AM to watch the sunrise at the world famous Angkor Wat temples. I thought I was going to pass out right away but I found it impossible to sleep so early in the day. I did a little socializing with some ...

By this time we were beginning to be templed out, so back in the bus to a $3.50 lunch of chicken and lemongrass.

After lunch our guide squeezed in Preah Khan before letting us go to Angkor Wat around 2. We were all pretty tired, but Angkor Wat is pretty awesome. Long walk down the causeway to the entrance. In a couple of levels before you get to the steep steps to the inner sanctum. So steep they ...
