Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

... not to, mainly because of the money, but also because of my lack of interest. Everyone says diving is a great experience, but I just haven't been excited enough to try it out.
There's not much else to say about my time on the island. It was just a time to unwind, catch some sun, and completely take it easy. At times it felt strange doing completely nothing, but then I would just look out on the beach and ...

Pulau Perhentian Day 144 (11th Oct)

... whizzed over to the fishing village to get lunch. We had to wait ages to get our food (even though I only ordered fried rice!), eventually after the laboured service we made our way to the lighthouse, ranging at around 30ft high. I jumped in the water with everyone else and swam around the coral, which wasn't as nice as the ones from Coral Garden.Maya convinced me to climb the lighthouse, going up the first leve and then jumping from the second level (15-20ft), it was a pretty high jump ...

Pulau Perhentian Day 143 (10th Oct)

... having that feeling again was satisfying. I After the workout I arranged to meet with Maya tommorow for snorkelling. I went back to Moonlight Cafe after bringing in my laundry in just before the heavy rain came down, it was really bucketing it down again, with thunder in the sky. I watched "The English Patient" with Edamaya (from Denmark), who I had met the night before, Mo and Leigh then came in drenched from the ...

Beware of Sharks on Land

... and was incredibly gentle. It was as if the turtle knew we were only curious visitors and he seemed to have welcomed us into his waters. It was a beautiful feeling to be around a creature who has lived through both World Wars and probably two turns of the centuries. He or she undoubtedly has lived through much but continues to swim peacefully in the waters, enjoying his time on earth each day at a time. We could learn a lot from animals.

After swimming with the first ...

A random few days of easy living

... who has ever stayed there has presumably sweated tons of liquid into the mattress and pillows. Again, less than pristine beddings doesn’t usually bother me, but the stench from my pillow suggested it had never ever been washed - it was literally difficult to breath through the fumes of stale sweat munching bacteria. There were also an abundance of bedbugs, and sitting here in KL a week later I’m still scratching the 50 plus (literally) bites all over my ...

Scuba Licenses!!!

... the first day, we had to get out of the room my 10 AM because it was entirely too hot and there was no electricity at that time of day.

We headed down the beach and walked up to a nearby dive shop that had a good reputation from our travel book. The place was called Quiver dive shop, and we spoke to the manager Steve about our interest in learning how to dive. We told him how long we had to stay, and he thought it would be enough time to get our PADI open water ...

Snorkelling with Sharks..!!!

... was fully booked! We head out to check out the local World War II museum which I was particularly keen to see, however, this being a Friday and the muslim holy day everywhere was closed. Sitting on the step of the deserted museum entrance we had to laugh at ourselves. I think butterflies actually know where they are going and more sense of purpose than us to bumbling idiots flitting around South East Asia.
We managed to book ourselves on ...

Getting over my JAWS complex!

... were also schools of barracudas, squid and yes, black tip sharks. When the guys at the dive centre told me there were lots of sharks in the surrounding sea, I got a bit worried... I was still worried after they told me that the sharks were pretty harmless and that there's never been a case of a shark attacking anyone around the island. You see, I've always had a 'Jaws complex'. I saw the movie when I was very young and since then, I've ...

Relaxation at the beach

... at 10am we were there and we had the whole day infront of us. The small Square Point resort is a nice place to stay, there are two bigger buildings with 10 rooms in each. We had a nice garden view and the sea was some 30 meters away, so not bad at all. We had full service in the resort, 4 meals a day and some organized activity. As the peak season starts only in june there were not many people on the island. We were the only westerners along with two swiss girls. Otherwise the ...
