High expectations

1st - 5th July 09:

Went to Railay with the intention to do some climbing as it is known as one of the very best places to climb in the whole world, and one of the most stunning beach locations in Thailnd. It was both and we were both stunned into silence with the jaw dropping beauty of the limestone cliffs and white sand beaches we saw as the longboat brought us round the coast from Railay, boat is the only available way to get here which makes it even more remote.

I kept going ...

The beach is this way....

Ahh what a fabulous week!!

We arrived by bus into Krabi town without drama, and headed to Ao Nang beach on the back of a pick-up truck...also known as a bus in Thailand!! We were greeted by another pick-up truck/bus, which then took us to P.A.N Beach Bungalows, our home for the next 2 nights. As we were the only guests at this resort, we were given a free upgrade to their nicest bungalow, which was literally on the beach!! The beach itself is very quiet (we were the only people on the ...

Rai Lay, really?!?

Got boat from Phi Phi, it rained a lot. We arrived at the Rai Lay Viewpoint Resort, checked into a horrible dirty room smelling of damp. Rained. We ate a nice meal. Went to sleep. Rained all night. Woke up, felt sick. Looked for another place to stay, still felt sick. Found Ya Ya Resort, checked in. Spent the day throwing up potent yellow bile in spasms. No idea what caused it! No problems with water, ate same food as Moll. Watched films, felt sick, rained more. Slept. Woke up, nausea gone, r...

Sun, sand, sea and cliffs

Arrived at Railay East after having done my visa run, and sat through the daily one hour long 5pm rain storm while waiting to meet up with Alex and the Aussies again.

Railay is a peninsula off Krabi in Thailand which can only be reached by boat due to the incredibly steep cliffs preventing any road access to the area. It's split into three main beaches: Rai Leh East, the cheaper, dirty beach side with all the bars playing plenty of reggae, showing bob marley memorabilia, and a certain...

Did you get to the Lagoon?

... quite eerie to realize this and it hit me quite suddently that I was in a place that witnessed such horror just a few years before. Despite that horror, the beauty overcame everything. The limestone cliffs that jut out of the water here are indescribable...

We chilled at the private beach until we were kicked out (which lasted around half an hour) and headed back into town. Not a bad first day.

The next day we had a pre-paid speed boat tour throughout the most ...

... that at least!!) we then travelled down to Ao-Nang which is the beachy part of Krabi (the main town on the west coast of Thailand). There we commenced in more sunbathing and swimming with the odd bit of shopping and stolling inbetween. here however the weather was a little different. as the afternoon rolled in so did the clouds. and with them came the thunder and rain, and this is not just any rain... this is rain beyond rain. it ...

... dared to get that close, because we saw a few monkey scraps (or simian set-tos). We went to two more bays, the last being Maya Bay (the actual setting for 'The Beach'). The beach was beautiful but because the cliffs are so high either side, we seemed to be vigorously chased across the beach by the shade. I have done loads of snorkelling and seen some brilliantly coloured fish (and also been bitten by one).

To hell or to Phi Phi

Most of yesterday was spent hanging around the place where we were staying. Rachel started to feel a lot better in the evening so we went into town for some dinner. We found a nice little Mexican place and it was delicious! Still haven't had anything that beats the Indian on Penang though. After dinner we did a bit of a pub crawl to see if the night life had anything to offer. We eventually stumbled upon a beach bar which turned out to be holding a Half ...

... has been marketed and overwhelmed with hotels and all that lot. Oh and the ferry port has to be seen to be believed, millions of people jumping on and off the jetty onto waiting ferries day and night. - If you hire a moto driver there are some proper quality beaches around the island, but this is a right do as they can charge what they want and end up taking the **** somewhat, as if you dont pay the price they want ...
