Hoi An, 29 April - 2 May 2009

Overnight soft sleeper (again) to Danang and then six of us shared a taxi to Hoi An. Here by 06h00 - in the pooring rain! Well, although its highly tourist orientated, we liked Hoi An so much we stayed an extra day! Happily its one of the few historic places to have been spared significant damage during the American/Vietnam war. It really has the architecture and feel of what you like to hope an old town in this part of the world would have. The weather seems to have broken and it rained a lo...

Nha Trang to Hoi An - Suits you sir!

moving on from Mui Ne we had our first experience of a sleeper bus,its a bus with beds...kind of so you can gently fall asleep whilst you travel the country and wake up fresh and ready to see new things....well not quite. the tour bus drivers are budding race drivers and masters that famed musical instrument the horn. a typical night will involve constant overtaking even if it is 3 lorries on a dirt road with headlights coming the other way (and yes this a full size coach!). The horn is used ...

Hoi An

The trip from Nha Trang to Hoi An is 11 hours by minibus, so we started at 6.15am. We arrived in Hoi An at 16.30 pm after we had a lunch stop at 14.00 pm. I had the intention to book a room in the Huy Hoang Hotel but the nearby Pho Hoi Hotel is comfortable too. I booked a room for $6 with a view on the Tho Bon river. In the evening I had a very tasty dinner at Cafe des Amis along the riverside. There is no menu, just a set meal which changes every day. Get the price worked out first-you pay b...

Hoi An..an ancient town

In a lovely old town of Hoi An, on the coast aboot mid way down Vietnam. I only stayed in Cat Ba for 2 nights and mosied on..to get from the island to the main bus station had to take a bus, boat and another bus. Then wait for another bus to head south a couple hours to Ninh Binh, only to wait there for 6 hrs for yet another bus with Hoi An being my end destination finally the next morning. Told you i was gonna move quite fast...i met a nice Malaysian guy in Cat Ba that booked the exact same ...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

Merry Christmas everone! My Christmas Eve was spent on a 12 hour bus ride from Attapeu, Laos to Hoi An, Vietnam. This was not a ride for people with motion sickness! The whole trip was through curvy mountain roads (the lines on the roads seemed optional and horns were used to round corners instead of caution!) but once I crossed the strange, empty border crossing at Bo Y with one other Vietnamese person (I was the only foreigner the whole bus trip) the views were amazing! The lush jungle moun...

Two more cycling days behind us and in total we've cycled about 230 K and I'm actually feeling ok!! The second day of cycling was really tough we started of with the 10 K hill....and believe me it was no hill, it was a mountain. I'm sure we cycled up at least 800m as the gradient was 8% most of the way!! I have to confess I gave up after about 8km of the hill....I was going so slow at that point I decided it wasn't fun anymore after ...

Family ties

I have a good story for you. Binh’s grandfather had 3 wives. We thought his grandmother was head wife, but she was actually the third wife. (We call her Ba Ngoai, pronounced like “bung-why”.) Her 5 children, Binh’s mom and siblings, are all in the US now. The children of the first wife live in Hanoi (up north, where we’re going in a few days), and apparently there ...

Quang Ngai and the My Lai Massacre

To break up the journey time between Da Nang and Nha Trang, we decided to spend a couple of nights at a small town called Quang Ngai. A very undeveloped part of Vietnam, yet to discover its full tourism potential, its only claim to fame is a sad one at that. About 2 kilometres from the coast a memorial to the My Lai (Son My) massacre can be found. On March 16th 1968 a sweeping party of American soldiers landed and performed ...

Quang Ngai and Around

Itching to get a little off the beaten track we took a bus from Hoi An down the coast to Quang Ngai a smallish town without much domestic or foriegn tourist interest and then a motorbike to the nearby My Khe beach. We had trouble finding somewhere to stay at first but eventually found a beachside restaurant with small bungalows out the back. They seemed pretty excited about our arrival and ...

New Years in Hoi An!

HE SAID: On Chistmas we had a compulsory $50 per person dinner and at this resort they provided a free buffet for all their guests. The music and singing was terrible but the food was good and the price was right. I was blown away by how nice of an event this was given the fact that it was free for about 75 people! Vietnam doesn't celebrate New Years like other countries (their new years is on a different date) so combine ...
