... is in august though, so we missed the crowds but since it was labor day weekend, all the americans from all the bases were there in full force. it was like we were on PB in san diego...they even had a surf contest that weekend. there was one major difference though, between beach culture in the states and beach culture in korea...koreans go to the beach fully clothed! everyone was wearing normal day clothes and if they ...

First Impressions

... the bars and restaurants are just like at home: they have to be trendy, or a chain, or original in a way, but to find something purely traditional, purely folklorical... seems impossible, just because it is as irrelevant as looking for a montmartre café at every stree corner in Paris.

This is the strangest of impressions for me: being in an Asian country which is just as developped as any of the western countries. It puts a number of things in reflexion, that's the least I can say.

... go from room to room, it's feels like we are going into the student's territory... Makes it harder to lay ground rules, and to follow through with them--short of carrying around a stick like so many teachers do. I'm looking forward to observing the differences in behavior.... ... Star Face to find the rest of the group had arrived. We paid our dues and swilled drinks for the night, my poison, whiskey and coke. It was good fun to chat with the other teachers about work and travel plans. Some being elementary teachers and some being university professors. After hearing about the lucrative packages universities offer I will certainly be looking at that as my contract runs out. It was great to hear about plans of hitting SE ...

Day of Liars

... anyway due to my stupid gluten allergy, but I already ordered my t-shirt in support and everything!!! We were so excited. But now, we have to go to Seoul on the very weekend of the main event!! Stupid "Day of Liars" (as my students understood April Fool's Day), it played a lot of jokes on me this year. For the record, this is the orientation we were supposed to be at in February, but weren't (which was not our fault). We ...

Being spolied again

· Busan, South Korea · GMT +8:00 hours Just as we thought I'm going to assume you don't have an eidetic memory (my apologies, not to mention admiration, if you do) and so will start this entry by reminding you that I finished the last one telling you that it was Saturday morning, we were on a one week break from camp and we were just about to leave Seoul for Busan, from where we were to catch, on Sunday ...

... mats to sleep on, and other than a fan the room was bare. But it was dirt cheap and 1 minute from the beach so we weren't complaining. The afternoon was spent stretched out on the sand, with a dip in the water (Sea of Japan) to rinse off any remains of the bus journey. Dinner consisted of fried chicken and a few beers in a small marquee overlooking the beach and then we set out in search of cocktails. Within 3 minutes (it is a tiny place) we concluded that there ...
