PADI in the Cooks

7/12/2006 Thu 7am flight to Cook Islands Met @ airport by Marianne, our host @ Are Renga hotel. Got a free upgrade to a private chalet with patio for the princely sum of $20 (8squid) each. Went to an Island Night @ the Staircase restaurant & bar. An island nite is basically the locals dressing up in native kit and dancing around to drums. Good fun. The compare was a hoot & kept trying to sell the tourist ladies to the warriors. Shared table with David & Jodie who were cool & gave us the low d...

We had no camera with us, and not much time- we had to find food! Remembering Tonga, where the market was the only source of fresh produce, we knew that if we didn't pick up anything now, we might be living on tinned tuna for a week!

Eggs, onions, kumera... we soon had the rudimentary ingredients for an ...

The Rooster and the Needle.

... The gradient also increased, until what began as a gentle slope became a definate climb. Despite the hard work however, I was loving every minute of it! Strange birds called in the distance and colourful lizards scampered underfoot. Almost before I knew it, I was nearing the Needle, 413m above sea level. The views from the top were astounding - the green jungle, punctuated by the bright pinks or yellows of flowering plants, sloping down to a sapphire ...

Weather, sickness, baggage - why, oh why?

... although we did anyway) as the water was crystal clear, fish everywhere. We landed on the island where they filmed Survivor and Castaway and enjoyed freshly cooked tuna before heading over to One Foot Island where we received our obligatory passport stamp and sent postcards. We went to two "Island Night"s while we were on Aitutaki, both very different. The first was at the "posh" resort over the water from our bungalows. Allegedly the guests were paying ...

... legend about the importance of church to the people. So today I made an exception and went to church. My new roommate Stephanie (who I'll talk about more later) and I tried to find clothes that covered up enough skin, which is rough when it's like 90+ degrees at 9 am. We set out from the Kii Kii Motel on foot and made our way into downtown Avarua to attend the Cook Islands Christian Church. Before arriving, I made a pit stop to safety pin my dress closed ...

... islands "Motus" - sorry I think that is spelled correctly). There are lots of kayaks around so hopefully we'll be able to get out and have an explore of the islands tomorrow. Not being bothered to cook we ended up at Sails restaurant on the beach for lunch today. It wasn't that expensive and the fish burger I had was yummy! We had island fries too, kinda like hot chips but made out of kumara, banana and taro. Not good for the waist line but you've got to try the local food, right?!?

... Judy (Papamoa couple) for lunch and with them negotiated what we thought was a reasonable deal with a taxi driver to explore a little more of the island. $20 an hour sounded good. He took us to see Robert Loius Stevenson's museum, past some impressive 2007 South Pacific games venues, a golf course, the airport and the new Aggie Grey's hotel. After three $120. Either his maths was no good or he was having us on. He explained that $20 was just for around town and we had driven some ...
