Queens Hwy, (formerly Outrigger Reef Fiji) Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji, 650-0044

I woke up this morning to VERY blustery weather. The wind here is crazy; it honestly never stops and is at a constant gale! I said goodbye to our Greek and British bungalow-mates and attempted to go for a walk, which was useless due to the high winds. I did, however, meet two men from the village Malevo who invited me back later. After taking an interesting shower, Brian and I set off in search of breakfast. We went back to Ice Bar on the Beach for french toast, but no bread was left. We opte...
Coral Coast, Fiji hiatt84A week of relaxation on a tropical island.... We arrived at Nadi Airport on Viti Levu on time (even our suitcases arrived with us) at noon, Monday 8th December after a 6¾ hour flight from Honolulu. But did I mention we left Honolulu at 7am on Sunday morning? I guess this is what happens when you cross the International Date Line. "Let's do the Time Warp again. It's just a jump to the left, then a step to the right." Just when we were grateful no-one was saying "Aloha" to us, this man suddenly...
Nadi, Viti Levu, Fiji jackandjillDon't ever make a hasty decision based on one source of information. This is a lesson that was reinforced recently. When planning this latest trip, I was warned by a colleague not to travel to Fiji, no matter what. In December, there had been a "military coup" to overthrow the government. Historically speaking, coups are something that certainly cause alarm, to say the least. A military can conjure a host negative imagery. My college explained that there were soldiers with machine guns all ov...

... arrival. The group sported traditional dress and wandered around the "village", performing in various combinations of singers, while we shopped.

After a while we followed the beating of drums to the show area of the village. After being ushered into bleacher seats the announcer approached me and gave permission to move to the far side of the "arena" so that I could get a ...
Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji tlbuster... really. We also played a game that consisted of pointing out the differences between Indo-Fijians (Indian Fijians) and Indigenous Fijians on the way to school. An Indo would be walking to school and our dad would be like "See that?..That's an Indo..." "See that?...That's an Indigenous." The population in Fijian is mainly Indian people and Indigenous Fijians and that's basically what the 4 past coups have been about, the different rights each group has and also about the churches. So we had 3 ...
Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji ajmueller4... spent on nappies for us both!! I always know if its bad if Phil gets nervous too and he was bricking it!!.

Just jumping off the boat with your snorkel is enough to give me a heart attack!! When I seen my first ever shark I was wishing I had those nappies again!!!!! OMG the moment you realise that you are swimming with a shark is a truly unforgettable moment!!! The more we swam, the more we saw. There were beautiful fish as well but they were really ...
Suva, Central, Fiji philandkatrina... the waves breaking on the reef and the children playing in the nearby village. You have to try it if you ever get to Beachouse! We can't finish without mentioning that, while in Fiji, we've also made acquaintance with Malcolm and Janet, a retired Scottish couple living in France and now traveling around the world. The two of them were great conversation partners, with so many interesting stories about all the places in the world where they've lived (quite a few ...
Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji gapostol... simple bure (bungalow) on the beach. There were plenty of opportunities to dive but I thought I'd save my money for the shark dive in Beqa lagoon. We were told by the manager of our place that their dive master doesn't use gloves when they feed their sharks in Mana. That dive wouldn't be later in the week but we were planning on heading east before than. The snorkelling on Mana was great, cheap too. The first day we arrived, the ...
Suva, Viti Levu, Fiji lisalegslim... 7 - 9.30pm, but that made it so peaceful. The people were amazing and the weather just kept getting better and better . Before we left on Sunday afternoon , we trekked for about 20 mins to a great waterfall, where all the local kids had a swim. They were all around 10 years old and had the most amazing smiles as they jumped off the cliff into the water. 3pm came and it was time to drive back. I thought about having my 1st sickie on the Monday, but guilt got the better of me.
Suva, Fiji fiji-travellers... other exciting things) and maybe try and go to a Church because apparently the choirs are amazing here.
