Historical Traveler Reviews of Outrigger Royal Kahana Resort Lahaina

Great place to stay and reasonable price

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Royal Kahana for 12 days in a one bedroom, ocean front room. It was so spacious and we had all the ammenties that we needed, kitchen, kitchenware, full refrigerator, t.v, balcony, washer and dryer. We didn't mind being away from all the shops b/c it was less touristy where we stayed. We rented a car and drove all over the island. I would highly recommend staying here. The beach isn't that great, but if you have a car, all the beaches are a 5 minute drive away. We had great views of the sunset and the other islands. I'm so glad we stayed here.

No negatives

We booked two 1bdr rooms at the Royal Kahana in March, 2003. Upon arrival, the lobby was clean, but remarkably unimpressive. We were very pleased, however, to have been assigned 11th and 12th floor rooms with great views of the ocean, as one of our chief reasons for choosing this location for a vacation was to watch the humpback whales breaching. The rooms were clean, fairly nicely furnished, had a well-equipped kitchen and contained a washer/dryer combo which proved very convenient. The pool was small. but generally sparsely used by other guests. Two grocery stores were located within a five or ten minute drive. The outdoor barbeque grills were kept immaculately clean, and eating outdoors at the nearby picnic tables was a true pleasure for midwesterners--no bugs!!!! The staff was very courteous and helpful. On our last day our flight left at 11:00p.m. and we were happy that the Hotel allowed us to keep our room until 10:00 that evening for a nominal $60.00 charge. This very late checkout effectively gave us an extra day for activities because we did not have to worry about the normal check-out time. The property had no restaurant, but there were a few restaurants located at a small shopping center about 200 ft. from the property, including Outback Steakhouse and McDonalds. All in all, this was a great sub-luxury resort.

Great place to stay on a budget!

The Royal Kahana was better than we expected! We stayed in a studio ocean view unit for 10 days, which included a small kitchette. The ocean view was a bit limited but was still nice. The staff was courteous & friendly. Hotel is very family friendly with an activities desk on premises (made it easy to book various island activities).

Hotel is located nearby to Lahaina/Kaanapali. Our stay was pleasant and the accomodations were nice & clean. We had a great experience and would recommend this hotel to any family traveling on a budget to Maui.

Not the greatest

If you are looking for a place to just crash close to Lahaina and Kaanapali, then this will do. But, if you want to be closer to more things to do (resturaunts, bars, etc.) and a nicer hotel, then stay somewhere in Kaanapali. We ended up driving to the resort hotels in Kaanapali and hanging out there most of the time. The Royal Kahana doesn't have a resturaunt or bar onsite and the original room (studio) we were put into was horrible. They moved us to a 1 bedroom, which turned out to be a lot nicer for a reasonable price. I would not recommend staying here unless you are on a tight budget and are just looking for a place to crash. If you want a condo type hotel you probably could find something better.

Loved it !

We stayed there for 5 nights during the first week of January, '03. The room and the kitchennette were very clean and well maintained. The kitchen came with some condiments such as salt/pepper/ coffee/sugar etc. There were more than enough pots/pans/cups/bowls/plates etc. They even had laundry detergent for the washer/dryer. We spent many evening having dinner on the balcony watching the sun set. The only drawback was the sliding doors of the balcony didnt keep the sound of the wind outside the room. Highly recommend this place, otherwise.

Convenient and gorgeous

We went to the Marc Royal Kahana for our honeymoon (June 2001) and everything was lovely. The rooms are large - ours had a kitchenette and washer/dryer (there's always laundry, even in Maui) - the view was great, and it was only a short bus/taxi/car ride from shopping in Lahaina. Definitely nice being away from all the crowds closer to Lahaina - all activity around our hotel stopped by about 8:30 p.m.

Everything you need

Stayed at the RKR for 9 days on my Honeymoon in March. Slightly cloudy and rainy during the stay. Lots of Whales can be seen from the Hotel. Friendly and efficient staff. The rooms are spacious and have all the amenities you need like a Washer and Dryer, which came in real handly. I liked the personal touches that it had, like a guestbook and books to read. We had a couple of technical difficulties like the sliding door stuck, and the microwave kept shutting itself off. But, the view is to die for which made up for that. Good activities desk, lots of parking, decent beach, nicely kept grounds. Will definately go back and bring the kids.

Great for on budget/family vacation

My family of four stayed at Royal Kahana in Feb. 2003. I made several room request before arrival and they accommodated all my needs. The one bedroom condo was very nice. It had a full kitchen which was very nice for cooking breakfast and some of our dinners. The staff was very friendly. The ocean view was beautiful. I would stay there again. The location was convenient, 10 min drive to Lahaina.

Royal Kahana

We stayed at the Royal Kahona in October. The day we arrived Maui was under a flood warning. Most of the tours had been cancelled for two days prior to our arrival so we didn't do any of the tours. We loved this hotel. The room had a washer/dryer, and kitchen. We did make a few small meals and sat on the balcony and had meals. The beach area was very nice, not at all crowded. We drove the road to Hana and enjoyed the whalers village area. Just wish we would have had better weather.

Nice, clean, friendly - would stay again

My entire family (ten of us) went to Maui and spent Thanksgiving last year (2001). We had two two-bedroom condos oceanfront. It was a great place. The rooms were large and spacious. Two bedrooms, 2.5 baths and a sofa sleeper provided more than enough room for the family. The balcony was a wraparound balcony and provided awesome views.
