The Big Island

Our flight flew into O'ahu and we immediately caught a connecting flight to the BI. During our 2 days there, we rented a car and basically drove all the way around the island, stopping at places highlighted in the Revealed Guides. We also of course drove up to the Volcano National Park. I wish we'd had time to actually do some of the hiking trails around the volcano. It's such a surreal experience. Aloha! We made it! We're in Kona. I'm on the lanai (a.k.a. patio) of our hotel room, sipping some Kona coffee...well, it's only the 10% version that the hotel has in the room. But it will suffice for now. I'm up early (for Hawaii) at 5:30 am. It's 10:30 back home, so I guess you could say I slept in. ha. (That's a numbers game I'm going to give up on until I'm back home. It messes with your mind to much to think "it's only 7 pm here, why am I tired? Oh yeah it's midnight back home; I'd be in ...

Love Keahou

from A TripAdvisor Member
Have stayed several times at the Keahou - loved it - close to Kona and next door to great snorkling beach. Nice pool. Rooms clean - rooms overlooking tidepool a must!! Highly recommend - going back in October!

Excellent value, sweet honeymoon

Stayed 5 nights starting June 30, 2003. Overall very pleasantly surprised and pleased. We'd love to return and spend more time here.We searched for travel packages and ruled out 2- star hotels. Expedia.com offered a few cheaper 3-star, but thanks to tripadvisor.com we passed on the Royal Kona and the King Kamehameha. Upon arrival at Kailua-Kona we were very glad we did!The Ohana Keauhou is further down Alii Road from the noise and congestion of Kailua, at mile marker 5 on the 35 MPH road. There's not much in close walking distance (businesses) but with a rental car we didn't care. The resort itself is gorgeous, with large, immaculate grounds, ample parking (albeit $5/day and a short walk from the lobby), and lots of amenities on site. We got very positive vibes about the place and its management, they really seem to have their act together. The first impression of the open lobby and terrace my new wife thought I was a real hero. The room was also great by our frugal standards; large and well equipped, including a cube fridge, coffee maker, free lock box, etc. Nice balconies. Even on the second floor, the room to which we were upgraded free, overlooking the pool, had a wonderful view. The only minor nits were -- nonfunctional bathroom fan, and toilet needed a jiggle sometimes to turn off. There are more positives than I can list, such as the terrace bar with live music and late night appetizers overlooking the tide pool, and the main restaurant also open-air view, a wonderful place for the Friday night sumptious buffet ($30/person) and sunset gazing. They are working on the pool- side shower, but the pool itself was fine. A top- rated snorkeling bay is a short walk out of the hotel grounds (or directly over a small wall into the water) to the public beach next door. The hotel has 311 rooms and hence supports a lot of features such as shops, restaurant, separate lunch and dinner bar and grills overlooking the sea, activity desk and shuttle pickups, etc.

This is the Hotel!

Twenty-six of us stayed here for 10 days in November for our daughters wedding. I was really impressed...and would have expected to pay much more for the nice rooms and beautiful setting. I inadvertantly wrote my review on the Aston Kona by the Sea, since this was formerly an Aston property. They do have a ridicilous $5 parking fee, per night, but when I go back, I will just ride the trolley to town and not rent a car.

Good hotel

from GREAKLY
It's a great hotel. Very large rooms. It's positioned in a way, that all rooms are side sea view, even the ones they sell as sea view. The point is how far from the sea your room is. Also this hotel is a bit remote from most attractions of the town of Kona. If you don't have a car, that might be a problem. Also the hotel doesn't have any beach. The shore is quite rocky. Overall, very good hotel.

Great Hotel

from RC_NE
Just spent a week at this hotel. I had a deluxe ocean-front room and the view from the private lanai was wonderful. I had a large room with a king sized bed, two chairs and ottoman, desk and chair, and refrigerator. The hotel and rooms were clean and well maintained. The staff seemed very friendly and helpful. Since it was about 6 miles south of town it was very quiet and peaceful.

The veranda lounge is built out over the tidepool and is a wonderful place to watch the sunset and the marine life. Green sea turtles can usually be found in this area.

The main drawback was a $5 parking fee. The bathroom was somewhat small and contained only a shower instead of a tub/shower combo.

For the price, I felt it was a very good value. While it doesn't have all the fancy amenities of the mega-resorts in Kohala, it also doesn't have the price that goes along with them.

Great Hotel

We stayed at the Keauhou Beach Resort in January 2003 and loved it. We would defintely stay there again!

The rooms are relatively large and well decorated and all have private lanais. Service was also great.

The public areas are attractive, and the hotel is located next to a great snorkeling beach. You can watch Green Sea Turtles from the "Veranda".

The hotel is in a park like environment with lots of trees and most rooms provide some view of the ocean.

This is a great, reasonably priced place.

Ohana Keauhou Beach Hotel was gine

from travlrover55
Spent one night at Ohana Keauhou Beach hotel a couple weeks ago - hotel has been refurbished since my last visit some 15 years ago - public spaces are SUPER, sleeping rooms are more than adequate. Had a partial ocean/mountain view room with view as advertised. My only complaint is restaurant close at 9 pm - it was 8:55 when we arrived and there was nowhere on property to get anything to eat (except some cold popcorn in the bar). Easy walk to one of the best snorkeling beaches on Hawaii - this one gets two thumbs up.

Great Place to Stay

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in this hotel for three nights in July 2002. It was wonderful. The hotel room had been recently remodeled. We were in a room with two double beds. There was a desk and chair. The bathroom was small, but very clean. The staff at the hotel were great and very friendly. It is right next to a great snorkeling beach. Our favorite part was the bar - it overlooks a giant tidepool. You can sip your drink and watch the turtles and fish as well as a great sunset. Would stay there again.

Honeymoon

from A TripAdvisor Member
My Wife and I have just got back from spending 11 nights of our Honeymoon at this Hotel. We spent the first 3 nights in Waikiki, which was nice, but the hotel here was just excellent. We spent 2 months in yr2000 doing the East Coast of the USA and found that this hotel knocked socks off of the hotels that we stayed in. great sea views, very quiet but still plenty to do. We were lucky as the Hotel waived the parking fee as it was our Honeymoon and wegot an upgrade too. The Restaurant was a little expensive and the menu restricted but the food nonetheless was of excellent quality. Anyone staying here must try the Seafood Buffet. I would also suggest going to ROYS Restaurant...ask at reception.

I would recommend this hotel and when I happen this way again i will certainly be staying here.

Say "Hi" to Willy for us

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I spent 8 days at this hotel in early April, 2002. Yes, it's somewhat older than the expensive resorts on the Kohala coast (I believe it was built in 1970). It was refurbished several years ago and we found the hotel clean and attractively sited. Being a few miles from town, it was also quiet. We saved dollars by selecting a garden view room - beautiful view and could still see and hear the ocean from our lanai.

We were most impressed by the staff, however -- from the helpful and friendly employees at the ourdoor front desk to service staff at the open air waterside lounge. I might also mention that our room was meticulously cleaned. The employees obviously care! Our special thanks for enhancing our stay go to our waiter, Willy, in the lounge. He was always helpful and welcoming and was ready to answer all of our ridiculous touristy questions. We joked that if Willy didn't know the answer to questions about local lore, he could make up an answer faster than anyone else. The only problem with Willy was that he was so pleasant and efficient that I consumed more good Kona beer than I normally would. Negatives: the main restaurant was expensive (we ate there only once) and we paid $5 nightly for parking. Still, a pleasant stay and we'll go back.
