I stayed at the Allegro Doradas Dec 4th -3nights. I found the service to be excellent! Everyone working there was very helpful and friendly.
But you tip, you did recieve better service. You could wait at the bar for 20min for a drink, while a guy tipping would get his drink twice before I got mine. The rooms were not a 4*. They were very plain and simple. It was a very nosiey hotel. I could hear everything from outside to upstairs. The food was good, the drinks were strong, the shows were entertaining, but have not changed in years! My favorite part of the hotel was that it had horseback riding on the beach for free! It I found a good rate at this hotel I would go back, I would just request a better room.

The "Ein, Zwei, Drei" song from the German childrens entertainment with be stuck in your head the whole time...!!. On whole, not a bad place to stay, the staff are very freindly and helpful, food is ok, the booze good. Food did become a bit monotonous, and "Hemingways" in the nearby plaza a welcome relief, a good meal for about £3.We stayed during the rainy season, and they mean it- monsoon like downpours, so sun worshipers beware, check when the rains are due and avoid. Also to avoid is booking excursions with your rep, they are about $20-$30 more expensive than with the local operators to be found in the plaza. Make purchases in Pesos, if in dollars its extortionate, good exchange rate with the pound. In conclusion, not bad for the money, safe and freindly
Would have been amazing...

I went to this place in January 2003. Reason was to patch up a shocking relationship with my girl of the moment. Well that failed but lets make clear the holiday was still fantastic. The hotel is not plush like the Rui Mambo I was at in 2001, but worked really well. Staff were great, room walked almost right onto the beach, a couple of bars which were pretty good. The main restaurant and the Pizza restaurant are both very good but the mexican and italian (I think) were terrible. But I dont select a POP holiday for the food. Its the atmosphere, the beach, the locals and the price! £430 AI from the Uk for a week. One reason you have to like this place is its the last hotel on this strip of beach, so if you want to get amongst locals you can stroll east and go party with the people of POP. I plan to return to POP in December but bring a chap this time and fully intend to get into the town for the clubbing and the ladies!
Worth the money

Date of Trip- Oct 2003 Who - Couple in their late 20's- early 30's Cost - We went last minute, so we got it on the cheap (500 Cnd$) Overall I liked this resort, though I found a few faults and drawbacks both with the resort, the beach area and the country itself. I hope you find this review useful. Food- One of the biggest drawbacks, you have the choice of of the 3 a la carte restaurants during your week-long stay(Italian, Grill and Mexican). They're pretty good. For every other day, and every breakfast and lunch you have the main buffet, and another little joint. The buffet has theme nights, (Dominican, Mexican, Gala, Seafood etc.) some of which are better than others. Ultimately though the main buffet is a big cafeteria and the food gets old by the end of the week. Drinks- Any mixed drink you can think of, and the local brew is pretty solid when it's cold. Nightlife - The Crazy Moon is the big local club, it good be be prepared to be hit on! Alot! Just chalked full of local players. Hemingways the local pub, also good. Rooms - They're clean. The air conditioning is sweet. We had a ocen view, (give or take the ill placed palm tree.) Solid overall. If you don't like your room complain and they assign you a new one. Trips - Sosa is great! Also the Puerto Plata tour. The "outback" tour got good reviews. The catamaran was alright, you get ALOT of sun so if that's worth it for you go for it. (Bring waterless hand wash, the washroom on the boat doesn't have soap.) The Beach - It's good. But if there is alot of rain before your trip the nearby rivers dump alot of soil into the water. As for the locals selling items on the beach, a firm no thank you is enough to get left alone. Activities- There's lots to do. Free horseback riding, windsurfing, little contests and events. Do as much or little as you like. Hints- Bring a big plastic mug, (thermal is even better) they have great drinks but they're all served in small glasses. One big glass will keep you on your beachchair way longer. Bring cool bits to trade. The locals offer to by our hats, sunglasses, watches etc. Hit your local dollar store for good stuff. Bring gifts (ie school stuff and simple toys) for the local kids, give them during the outback trip or get a friend to! Hope this all helps!
Allegro

My wife and I stayed at the Allegro for a week and must say the food was really great. I must say that apart from the food there were some things about the resort that could use some improvement. They should consider adding a gym because it really is no fun having to walk to another hotel to use their facility. Second the night time entertainment could use some work too. Rather than having a group of professional entertainers every evening, they had them there every other night and the local entertainers really were "bad." Other than that it still is a well kept resort and people were friendly.

My wife and i have stayed at your Allegro Playa Dorado 3 times in the past 15 months and have thoroughly enjoyed our stays. In mid September we travelled there and had a fine time except for an unpleasant incident on our last day.We were checking out only to find a charge for a safe lock billed to our account. We had paid in cash for thisand also gave a credit card imprint.I refused to pay for the same item twice and when i protested, they assured me that the desk clerk was honest, implying that i was not. After some heated conversation, your manager took charge and canceled the credit card item, even though i offered to pay for it.This,i may add was in front of many guests. Also the amount was negligible, about $15.00 cdn.I am a pofessional man and not used to this behaviour.I would hesitate to travel to a place 3 times if it was not enjoyable. My main grievance is that not one word of apalogy was forthcoming from any source.I felt that the least that someone could have done was apologise for the inconvenience. It was a depressing way to end our holiday Julian M. Week in Heaven...

I was hesitant not having too much info on this place, but what a great surprise! Couldn't ask for anything better, seriously! Everything from nice, clean rooms, to delicious, various foods to beautiful beach...
I've been to another place in Puerto Plata, and thought it was great, until I spent a week at the Allegro! You know that Corona commercial when they say "What do you feel like doing? Nothing...", well that was just it! You could just lay on the beach or by the pools, and whenever we felt like doing something though, there was always an activity going on, either with the Hotel's Fun Club, or Jet Skiing ($), or kayaking, etc... We had the Club Cameleon service, and were given excellent service and informed of several things to do or to be aware of by our Concierge (also given better exchange rate than with the Hotel's bank).
Well worth your $$$. This was our first trip as a couple (27 and 29 years old) and couldn't wish for better.
Fantastic!

Spent my 40th Birthday at the Hotel Playa Dorada in May2003 with my fiancee. What a fantastic hotel. Staff friendly, grounds well maintained, weather excellent, food great, casino a good night out (but not all-inclusive!!). Didn't really watch any entertainment but heard it was pretty basic. Have previously been to the Villas Dorada (next door) which wasn't a patch on this hotel. Would definitely go again.
Highly recommended.
