Historical Traveler Reviews of Nh Krystal Laguna Villas & Resort Colon
Amazing
from A TripAdvisor Member
My 10 yr. old son and I stayed at the Gamboa for 4 nights from Mar. 24-28,2005. It was such an amazing adventure! We stayed in the villas and we wouldn't have had it any other way. They were very charming and spacious. The only thing that I would change is the type of locks on the doors. They were button locks and you must remember to push the button in before you leave. The air conditioner in the bedroom cooled down the whole apartment as well as there were 3 ceiling fans. If your looking for wildlife it's all there. We would get up at 6:00a.m. and take a walk along the trails. We saw agoutis, snakes, frogs, squirrels and iguanas. Birds of every colour could be viewed right from our kitchen window. Every morning flocks of toucans and amazon parrots would fly over us. We would turn off the air conditioning at night and leave on the ceiling fans so that we could be woken up by the sounds of the rainforest in the morning. If the hundreds of birds singing different songs didn't wake you up the howler monkeys sure will. My son really enjoyed watching the crocodiles down by the marina. Our other highlight was Monkey Island. We took the first boat out at 8:15 a.m. and saw the white faced capuchin monkey and howler monkeys. We also some Ospreys and a 3 toed sloth. During the free night tour (make sure you sign up for it in the morning) we saw turtles and capybaras.
The service was very good. They did their best to help when needed. Language was not really a problem. Knowing a little spanish will help, especially if you need to communicate with the maids. Tour desk people are great. They helped us get to the dock to go to the Smithsonian's Barro Colorado Island and I didn't even book the tour with them. Both my son and I hope to go back again, but this time for a week.
Beautiful spot in the middle of the rainforest

We just came back from spending two days at the Gamboa Rainforest Hotel in Panama. I only wish we had more time to stay there. This place is first class. The grounds and pool are beautiful. So is the bar and lobby. Stay in the main lodge, it's worth the extra money. The hotel is not too big and we met many wonderful people there. We went to monkey island and saw lots of monkeys. Be sure to go early in the day and bring snacks for the monkeys. We also went on the tram over the rainforest. At the end you walk up to the top of a lookout tower - great views of the canal area. The food is good and they had a nice selection of wine and beer. Our room had a balcony and hammock overlooking the grounds. Would definitely recommend this place, and we will go back.
Breathtaking, energygiving

We visited the Gamboa for 4 nights in January; I wish I'd been there for a week! The food is succulent, the pool large and quiet, the nature hikes fun and interesting. We switched to the main building because the windows in the villas are sealed - worth it!! the view from your balcony hammock is unforgettable. It only rained for about 10 minutes, despite our reservations about it being the RAINforest, and hardly ever saw a mosquito! Took kayaks up river by ourselves (disappointed we didn't see any crocs on the banks) and took bikes through village of Gamboa and up pipeline road. Climbed to the top of the lookout at 6 am, listened to the howler monkeys and birds- amazing views!! Embera native village was wonderful - visit now before the culture is irreversibly changed.
Lovely grounds
from Smeddum
We arrived very early for checkin and were able to use the facilities of the hotel which was extremely convenient. The hotel needs to invest in additional lounge chairs around the pool and the upper deck area. There was an obvious severe shortage of seats after 10:00 a.m. The pool is lovely and the grounds a delight, including the exhibit spaces. The staff were helpful and friendly, most spoke excellent English which was a bonus not as common in other areas of the country. Villas were good value for money. Order the pasta with mushrooms at the upper balcony casual restaurant. The spa is very nice but had to ask for shampoo and body lotion as no dispensers or baskets with hotel products were in evidence, or bring your own products. Allow plenty of time to checkout. It took 45 mins. from calling to give heads-up to completing the process. If the bellman does not appear after 5-10 mins. call reception again as the single receptionist can get extremely busy and may not have informed him. Overall enjoyed our quiet stay and convenient for trips around the region and into Panama City. Would consider this a three/four star property with potential to reach five star with some work and additional guests.
Gamboa Rainforest Resort--Mostly Wonderful
from KirklandJoy
We stayed a week through a condo trade (we booked a suite plus another 2 rooms as there were 7 in our party) at Gamboa Rainforest Resort. For the most part, we had a wonderful time and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The food was quite good, with several restaurant options as well as a nicely presented buffet for every meal if you preferred. The complex is huge and you have to make a point of getting out and exploring all it has to offer. We also took 4 day-trips while there, so much of our time wasn't even at the hotel. We were there the week just before Christmas '04, and the place was very quiet...the pool was perfect because there were so few guests. The pool, by the way, is very nice and extremely large in a most pleasant setting right along the Canal. We had our 18, 19 and 21 year-old kids with us and their only complaint was that there was no action in the disco. So we all ended up having ping-pong and pool tournaments every night after dinner (hey--you make do with what you got!) or we played cards, or we simply collapsed from so much touring during the day.
The resort setting is fabulous. Considering that my preference on for a week's stay would be at a beach, this was an absolutely beautiful alternative, well worth seeking out. It is a 30-45 drive to Panama City or Balboa, depending on traffic, so you need to be aware of that. If you have a unit with a frig, do you grocery shopping before you get there. Balboa had a great grocery store and we just had our tour guide stop there late one afternoon after one of our tours and he didn't mind at all (and got a nice big tip for going out of his way for us). If you want night life, this is not the place; but we just went out on the town a couple of times in Panama City, even did a night tour of the city which was fun.
Here are the drawbacks: Our rooms were very musty smelling and they kept telling us it was because they were in the rainforest (which is BS) and would bring in some dehumidfiers that worked for our suite, but not for my sister's room. I asked about relocating because my sister and I both have Asthma, but we were told all the rooms were the same. After having read one of the reviews above about upper floor rooms not being as musty, I think I would have pressed them on that and made them move us. Maybe that's where they relegate us condo-traders...to the musty basement! Aside from that, the rooms were quite nice with great big bathrooms and decks w/hammocks that all faced the Canal. It is truly unfortunate that they cannot figure out how to eliminate the musty smell because to me, that is a huge thumbs down and I would definately not categorize this hotel as a 4 or 5 star resort for that reason alone. The Villas, although a 5 minute walk away from the main building and pool really looked more appealing to us, particularly if they aren't musty! These were typical housing for the Canal workers and their families and they've been preserved and updated quite nicely. They give you more a sense of what it was like to live there back then.
The resort could also use some more shopping opportunities since it is so far away from anything else. The one shop there is nice, but very small (although they do sell bottled water there as well as in your room). It wasn't until we walked down the road to the exhibits that we discovered the little local crafts people selling their wares. There are a lot of trails for just walking and exploring--just make sure you don't get lost!
We arranged all our touring through Ancon Expeditions ahead of time and I cannot say enough good things about them! Gamboa also has a tour desk, but I'm sure you pay more going through them. Their tram tour was very nice (a little pricey) and the exhibits are worth checking out (all part of the price). We didn't even have time to make it down to the marina to rent kayaks or anything, and we were never around at lunchtime to eat at the restaurant there which is supposed to be quite nice.
Overall, I'd give this resort ***, with the hopes that it can remedy the mustiness problem. If there had not been that problem, it would have been a **** in my book.
Disappointed at the gamboa resort
from A TripAdvisor Member
i was at this resort for 4 day during the christmas holidays 2004 and
if you are the type that likes the quiet atmosphere this is for you.
i would not recommend this place as a 5 star, this is only a 3 star
this resort does not have any entertainment or dancing or games to play, only table games
there isn't a corner store in sight to buy any snacks or water, you would have to take the bus or taxi to get to panama city, which would take approx. 1/2 hour.
since this was an all inclusive resort be very carefull, new year's eve
was not part of the package, the cost to attend the new years party
was $50. per person.
the service at the monkeybar was terrible, the bartender wouldn't acknowledge the fact that you were waiting for a drink. the bar area hasn't been cleaned since we arrived.
at the breakfast buffet we had to ask 3 servers to fill our cups, since the other two didn't respond to our request.
when staying at this resort, the villa apartments only have 1 double bed, if you want to stay at the hotel of the resort you would have to pay extra for an upgrade. keeping in mind that the bottom floor of the hotel smells of mold. and the further up on the floors you go the more it would cost to upgrade.
the pool area of this resort only has 17 lounge chairs and approx. 30 chairs. this resort can hold up to approx 250 people, not enough lounge
chairs, don't you think?
the only thing we actually enjoyed from this 4 day stay was the tour of the monkey island, the sun, the beautiful scenery, and the exotic animals.
we didn't take the nightly boat ride, due to the fact that there were bugs at night.
i would not recommend this resort to people who are looking for a good time.
LOVED IT, and will RETURN!

This place is amazing. If you are looking for non stop party atmosphere I'd recommend the Decameron. If you are looking for peace, tranquility, amazing animal and bird sightings and "being at one with nature" this is it!!
Where to start, Monkey Island tour is a must. The guides know how to spot sloths on the way and will go out of their way to ensure you are able to experience everything. Monkeys will come out onto your boat and eat what ever you have brought for them. They are crafty so keep your bags closed :)
There are many free excursions offered by the hotel as well such as visits to the exhibits, guided nature walks (amazing thanks Omar!), guided (driven) nocturnal animal sightings, guided kayaking etc.
Don't forget to feed the cayman and turtles when dining by the Chagres River while watching the ships go through the canal.
You will most certainly see toucans, abouti's, capiberas, lizards and big iguanas, possibly owls, sloths, monkeys, and so much more!
If you can swing it go on the Canal Transit tour..its a day and a little steep but worth it!
Many other tours, highly recommended, Adult and child friendly.
ENJOY
TIP, take a walk through the exhibits to visit the native women selling their handicrafts (10 min walk). Price is at least 1/2 of what you would pay in the gift shop. For other handicrafts, ask someone to bring you to the YMCA.
Fabulous rainforest holiday!
from PattyChoux
We had a fabulous time at the Gamboa Rainforest resort in Panama. What a great trip for those who love nature but also want to relax! The hotel was beautiful, the setting on the Chagres river was gorgeous and there were lots of nature activities to do, like hiking, kayaking, boating in to the canal and visiting Monkey Island. You could also just lounge by the beautiful pool and do nothing.
My husband, who's a birder, says it's some of the best birding he's ever seen. Toucans were in our backyard tree in the morning. Gamboa Resort is just a five minute drive to the world famour Pipeline Road for birding. If you go, I would highly highly recommend taking a day trip in motorized dugout canoe to visit the Embera indigenous people. They are located up the river in Chagres National Park. You can arrange visits with Ancon Expeditions, a nature tour company that has other interesting Panama day trips. The front desk can call at Gamboa or you can make arrangements beforehand at anconexpeditions They will pick you up at the resort. The Embera Indians are a fascinating people. They will demonstrate how they weave baskets and carve. You get to meet them in their own village so it is not a tourist set-up. It was a fabulous day.
Great hotel in the rainforest!!
from MandiZm
My husband and I stayed in the main resort building from November 20-23. We had a deluxe room on the top floor with an incredible view of the Charges River and the rainforest. Our balcony even had a hammock! The food was very good. I recommend going down to the marina and eating at the restaurant for lunch at least once. It has a fabulous buffet and you can watch ships cruise down the canal. The pool is lovely and great for lounging (the pool bar makes great drinks in a coconut). They hotel offers many ecological tours. We did two. We did the "Monkey Island Tour" which entails going on a small speedboat on the Panama Canal and looking at monkeys, turtles, and birds in their natural habitat. Watching the huge cargo ships silently cruise the canal makes the experience surreal. We also did the canopy tour which I recommend. The staff at this hotel is also fantastic. They went out of their way to make our stay unforgetable. Overall, I give this hotel an A+...relaxing, tranquil, hotel with lots of ecological tours available!
After our stay at the Gamboa, we went to another hotel (Barcelo) which was about three hours away. We hired a tour guide/driver who came highly recommended from another couple at the resort. He took us to a nice restaurant in Panama City and to the Mira Flores Locks before driving us to our hotel on the Pacific Ocean side of the country. I absolutely must recommend him if you are looking for a guide in Panama. We ended up hiring him twice during our stay in Panama. He speaks excellent english and is very knowlegable on virtually any aspect of Panamanian history/politics and ecology. He also adds a unique perspective that you simply cannot get from the guidebooks!

4 Days At the Gamboa
from BarrieLovetotravel
We had a great time here. Great food. We did not stay at the main resort but could have upgraded. We were only about two minutes down the road. We enjoyed a boat ride up the Panama Canal with just our driver. Great man. Lots of walking. For us four days was enough. Amazing place to go at least once. Feb. to April is good--no bugs that we saw. Jungle all around. Neat. Worth going to as the main resort is spectacular!!
