... the way we came across another camp of keen Javanese fishermen (and women), where he sternly checked their permits and exhorted them to take all their litter home. When we came back through the same camp later the atmosphere was more relaxed, and the other people realised they recognised Baba from the television, where he had won a talent competition telling jokes! He obliged them by doing a routine about how the country's different races sing and ...
Paramaribo, Suriname els_and_peter... by different women – he said that if you are reasonably successful you can take your pick. We did not see any wild animals at all, which locals claimed was due to the dry season. This did not make sense to us as surely animals would come to the river to drink. The truth is that most animals have been eaten! Nothing escapes, not even iguanas or toucans! In fact we have seen more wildlife from our guesthouse in Paramaribo, including: parrots, parakeets, large birds ...
Paramaribo, Suriname els_and_peter... the main shopping centre, which is famous for rip off designer clothes but did not see anything we wanted. We ended up at the central market, which sells quite a lot of different things; we bought some more food there and then returned to the vehicle. In the afternoon we went to the restored colonial fort, this is a pentagon shaped fort, quite small at about 100 meters wide. Inside they have a small museum but not much in the way of explanation in English.
Paramaribo, Suriname mikeandmary... a standard 12 -15 seat minibus - Toyota Hiace or similar. Yes, you noticed - the bus does not usually go over the border- which is a river crossed by a ferry. Your hotel or guest house in Paramaribo will almost certainly know one or more of the small companies transporting to the border. They will usually be able to collect you from where you are staying. Because the ferry only goes once a day, the transport is timed early enough to get to the ferry in ...
Paramaribo, Suriname refugee... that I spent most of the time lying down, my Aunties (and Uncle Bissoon) spoiled me silly. I couldn't sit still but someone was cooking something for me or giving me something to eat or buying something for me to eat. I mostly watched t.v. all day, and there was, of all miracles, a shower and hot water, and air conditioning! Oh, Oh, Oh, and a washing machine and dryer!!!! So I didn't have to cook or wash or anything for that entire week. Plus, my cousin Tina took me ...

Paramaribo, Suriname asanchez... them lying all over the ground. Needless to say the ones not split found their way to my knife. Galibi is quite a thriving village. They have a great looking school, quite new. A women's center which sells crafts, a store and a well established radio station. We visited the radio station as this is part of Sherilyn's work. She was impressed and said it was the best equipped radio station she has seen yet in Suriname. They have been in operation for 9 years and have a joint ...
Parimaribo, Suriname mary_in_surinam... Holland or America for everything". Many others share her sentiments. Talking to people about 1975 and what it was like, I am told by many that Suriname was not ready for independence and they have suffered as a result. Some think it was forced on them by Holland and others the manipulations of the political power brokers of the time. I am finding increasingly that conversations with Surinames about their recent history yields a curious and confusing mix ...
Parimaribo, Suriname mary_in_surinam... new Peace Corp volunteer who has been assigned to SNMP and his background is management and project planning. The Peace Corp folks are encouraged to spend the first 3 months not even trying to accomplish anything, but just hanging around their placement getting a handle of what's what. Jack is doing just that and mostly shaking his head and lamenting his placement. Jack likes the big picture and is frustrated with the dysfunction at the operational level. He likes to ...
