We're in Petra!

This has been quite an experience. The border crossing at the Allenby Bridge or King Hussein Border Crossing (it has two names) was chaos. First we took a taxi from the hotel in Jerusalem to the border. On the drive we descended from 2360 feet, the elevation in Jerusalem, to more than 1200 feet below sea level. The border crossing is the lowest place on Earth! We sat at the border checkpoint for about 30 minutes for no apparent reason...at least none that was offered. Once we got to the actua...

The lowest point on Earth

A very welcome nights sleep was rudely interrupted by a 6.30am alarm call but by the end of breakfast and with the help of several cups of tea I was feeling ready for the day. Bags were loaded on the bus and we headed North for a 45 minute journey to Jerash "one of the best examples in the Middle East of a Roman provincial city". We spent a couple of hours exploring the site but could have spent much longer. There were 2 amphitheatres, 2 colonnaded streets, multiple churches, temples and a pa...

Day 17 Amman to Petra

Today we are leaving Amman and head out to Petra. First stop is Mount Nebo. On top of Mount Nebo you are looking at the Jordan Valley. Not so far in the distance Israel. Mount Nebo is famous as the final burial ground of Moses. Pope John Paul II visited here and an olive tree was planed in his honor. The top of mount Nebo has a great view. The first church was closed for renovation. There was a temporary tent setup with mosaic floor displayed. A small museum with a tiny gift shop. Our guide Ay...

Day 18 Petra

The long awaited for visit to Petra is finally here. Seeing Petra at night was amazing but I can't wait to see it during the day. We had breakfast at the hotel. A buffet with all the usual fair exception for one thing... Peanut Butter. I found a jar of PB by the bread section next to the jams and honey.. It was heaven... I could have just have that and I would be happy. yes Nutella is just not the same. We waited at the lobby to get picked up by Aiman.. could have just meet at the entrance si...

Madaba - Mt. Nebo - Wadi al-Mujib - Karak

Today we left our hotel in Amman. But we will return here for a night at the very end of our trip. The first stop was in Madaba. The most famous thing in Madaba is the Palastine Map from the 6th century in the Greek Orthodox St. George Church. It's a 6 x 15.5 m/19 x 50 ft mosaic with ca. 2.3 Million stones that shows a landscape. Today a big part of the map is destroyed. If you wanna buy a mosaic, this is the place. But compare the prices and the qualities first. And don't forget to haggle! T...

Petra: the Highlight of Jordan!

The highlight of every Jordan tour must to be the visit to Petra, the old Nabataean capital. I could stay here a lot more than a day. Sometimes you imagine something in your fantasy, and then, when you're really there...it's kinda disappointing. Not here. The real thing will exceed all your expectations!! Important: Wear a sunhat and sunglasses and don't forget the sunlotion. Bring along a lot of water, you can't buy everywhere mineralwater. Sturdy shoes are recommended because of the stony a...

Wadi Rum - Aqaba

The Wadi Rum was our last station before Aqaba. The landscape became famous by Lawrence of Arabia. A part of the movie of the same name was shot here. With a SUV we drove through the desertlike landscape. You shouldn't wear shorts and T-shirts because of the tradition-conscious Bedouins. In many places you can find petrographs. They came from the Nabataeans, Minaeans or Thamudaeans. And Bedouins scratched their life into the stone. These drawings in the canyon of Jebel Khazali are easy accessi...

Aqaba

from A TripAdvisor Member

from 5*Hotelreviewer

Welcome relief from the desert, wonderful stay

Stop! Don't look anyfurther, you're wasting your time. This is a great hotel and the service, beauty and the convenience factor eliminates all other entries. It's over the top. You're literally steps from the entrance gate to Petra so in the extreme heat fo the afternoon when you are climbing back up the hot and dusty path from the siq in Petra, you are so glad you picked this hotel.

The Hotel is almost "charming" but still has a masculine feel to it. It is large but not too big. The decor is elegantly middle eastern and very beautiful. From the moment we arrived we felt welcome. The Reception was warm, polite and efficient, and although our room wasn't ready, we understood as we arrived well before noon. They stored our luggage while we spent a few hours in Petra.

It was absolutely blazing hot while we were there (late May) and when we returned to the hotel the pool was the most welcoming thing on earth. Although quite cold! I opted to sip a nice cold beer to cool off in the shade by the pool and found a bit of heaven.

The AC in the huge room was perfect as was the bed and decor. The breakfast was typical for the nicer hotels in Jordan, except the breakfast room here is prettier. It consists of a fantastic buffet of fresh vegetables, yoghurt, cheese, cereal, juice, bread and even American things like eggs and meat. We ate dinner at the hotel after deciding we were too tired to go out. Decided on the quiet more formal restaurant rather than the popular buffet and were treated like royalty. I can't say anything negative about the entire experience.

I do hope that I return to Petra someday and if I do I will definelty stay here again.

Un hotel excelente

from A TripAdvisor Member

Great hotel and excellent location

from 5*Hotelreviewer
I stayed at the hotel in January 2006. It is a great hotel very close to the entrance to the site of Petra. The public areas are spectacular and decorated in local style. The room was a good size and clean. The food was great especially the meze and other local specialities available in the bar area. Staff friendly and helpful. Be prepared for stringent security measures to get into the hotel following the attacks last year in Amman.

Great choice

from disasterprofessor
Stayed at the Movenpick for two nights last week, and I loved it. The room was huge with fresh fruit, bath salts, etc on arrival, the hotel was beautiful, and the rooftop bar was the single best thing about Petra (besides the ruins)- dinner, Jordanian wine, a water pipe, and the sun setting over the hills.

Although many Americans are nervous about visiting the Middle East, Jordan is a beautiful and friendly country, and I encourage everybody to go and see it for themselves. Everybody spoke english (95% of all street signs are in english & arabic), the scenery was magnificent, as was the weather. I'm looking forward to bringing my daughters in two years when they are 9.

I also encourage folks to cross at the southern Eilat/Aquaba crossing. It was very fast and efficient on both the Israeli and Jordanian sides (less than 30 minutes). Coming back into Israel at the Allenby Bridge took 4 hours.

Couldn't do better than stay here

from A TripAdvisor Member
After having stayed in a ropey place a few nights before, we were delighted to arrive at the Moverpick. It more than lived up to our expectations. The attentive and professional staff helped to make our stay very enjoyable.

Ideally situated close to the gate for an early walk into Petra. Conversely after a hot walk back it was wonderful not to have to walk up the hill had we been staying else where. Relaxing afterwards up on the roof garden eating one of the hotels famous ice creams

is a must.

Our room was very spacious and comfortable with a balcony. Also very quiet for a good nights rest. In fact everything a good 5 star hotel should be. Thoroughly recommended.

Nice hotel, great location near the Petra Gate

from A TripAdvisor Member
Very nice hotel, perfectly situated next to the gate into Petra - much more convenient than staying up in the main town area.

Comfortable rooms, helpful staff, nice pool area.

Restaurants are expensive considering the good quality restaurants nearby. The buffet especially is over-priced.

Recommended hotel.

If you're going to Petra, you'd probably like to stay close to the main attraction; The Petra Siq and temples. This 5-star hotel is right at the entrance, and it doesn't get much better than that.

The pictures on the Expedia website don't quite do it justice, for I found the room to be much nicer than I had expected. It was modern, clean and comfortable - I even had a small balcony. There was turn-down service every night (and yes, with a small chocolate placed on the pillow). The air condition worked perfectly.

The TV set provided CNN US and BBC World, among german, french and of course arabic stations.

The bathroom - which had a tub - was clean, modern and stacked with amenities. (In my room the drain ran too slow, and in spite of all staff efforts did not work perfectly for the rest of my stay).

The hotel is beautiful - especially the public areas, with the magnificient atrium in the middle, but what really impressed me was the attentiveness and cordiality of the staff.Through the years I have stayed in some 5-stars hotels, and this staff gets top notch.

To my surprise I found that this hotel does not have an ATM. There are banks \ ATMs in the nearby town,though.(20 minutes walking, 2 minutes by taxi) You will need JOD for the entrance fee for the Siq (JOD 21,-)and, if you wish - the horse \ donkey services when you go through it. (I myself walked, and would recommend just that)

Breakfast at the hotel (which was included in my rate) is a treat. A rich selection of foods and drinks, eggs made to your liking, and a relaxed, luxorious atmosphere all over.

I have mentioned two small minuses. However, I will gladly give this hotel a top rating, because of its high standard, its staff, and for the absolute 5 star hotel feeling you can enjoy after walking the breathtaking Petra site. This is the place to stay.
