The Mount Irving Bay beach looked inviting, as did another one a mile or so further up the road. But they were also deserted and we had been cautioned about using a beach area of that description (the forces of evil, don't you know.) Eventually we came upon one just outside Plymouth that seemed to be what we were looking for. It may have been Arnos Vale beach, then again maybe it wasn't.

In researching things to do in Tobago, one priority was clear. The Tobago Main Ridge Forest Reserve was created, amazingly, by an ordinance in British Parliament in 1776, making it the world's oldest such reserve, we are told. Ted and Alison are both professional biologists and foresters so a guided tour of this tropical rain forest was not to be missed.

... woman, still glaring, who thrust out her jaw in my direction and said "Eh?" I decided to try my luck at another kitchen.

Later that day we gathered on the beach below our apartment for a swim. Happily, a moderate surf was up, creating waves that we could body-surf upon. It was a great thrill for me to be able to share this activity - that I used to live for as a boy - with my son and grand children.

If you were trying to describe the perfect tropical beach, Pigeon Point would fit the bill to a tee. On the windward, or east side, wind surfers and parasailers are in their glory as steady trade winds propel them at remarkable speeds over sand and coral shoals lying beneath the amazing turquoise sea. On the leeward side, the most idyllic coral-sand beach you can imagine slides gently into the clear blue waters.
