to Zanzibar

Arrived late in Zanzibar and took an easy cab to our hotel. Stonetown is great place to wander around and poke your head in and out of different shops, museums, etc. We stayed here a couple of days (Dhow Palace) just to catch our breath and get over a LONG flight. There are great places to eat but we especially enjoyed a place called Two Tables which was just a man's house. There were only two other people there that evening (we actually sat at one table) and were served food from the gentlem...

The Independant Spirit takes flight!

This was very much a spontaneous trip! So, no research done, everything was to be a surprise and I was travelling alone - a first for me.

It wasn't meant to be much of an 'adventure' trip rather a relaxing break away, not to do much at all. So, I arrive at the airport on Zanzibar island, flew with 1Time. And the usual, get bombarded by taxi drivers and dealers, mostly selling cashews, for 5000 Tanzanian shillings. And what is that in Rand? or Dollars? I haven't even learnt this most c...

Silly drunk in Zanzibar

... some future day.

We woke up at 4:30am this morning from our campsite outside Dar, packing up our tents, setting up breakfast, eating and breaking it all down again. When we got to the ferry terminal it was chaos. Heini had run up ahead to get our tickets and was unsuccessfully trying to fend people off behind him who were stuffing money into the booth and being rewarded with tickets. Finally he was able to purchase all thirteen tickets and our motley ...

We introduced ourselves to our 3 new people as these names, haha!
So the morning afterwas a trip on the ferry where we adopted a dutch couple who weren't really sure what they were doing so tagged along with us. We ...

Sailing, Diving, and Full Moon Party in Zanzibar

... you can see the ocean and hear the sound of the waves. In the morning, you can see the sinrise! We were going to spend 4 days in Zanzibar, the exotic Spice Island! This was a welcome break from the trcuk and the driving routine.
In the morning, we packed our bags, the truck dropped us to the small ferry, which went across the bay to the center of Dar es Salaam. From there, we took a big catamaran to Zanzibar. Everybody was excitied and looking forward to it ...

Home run, for some

... dinner- make sure it is one I will have missed on my travels as well.
Oliver and Dan are hoping to get the 48hour train on Friday as well, so we all leave for Lusaka together, but I get there considerably faster, albeit via Johannesberg. They did offer to fly to Lusaka with me (please note Helen, they are not bad boys) but as this involved me buying 3 tickets at $500 instead of ...

... met on the ferry to their hotel (There were a million people offering to find you accomodation but it was slightly overwhelming on my own) and asked there for directions to my hotel. The guy that worked there ended up walking me for almost 45 minutes to find it (Stone Town is a bit confusing to find your way around...I never would have gotten there on my own, although it was very close to the ferry terminal and I had already walked like half an hour with the others I ...

Zanzibar Spice Tour

... The "king of spice" is cloves, since the government of Tanzania depends on cloves for much of its funding. The "queen of spice" is cinnimon. The cinnimon tree roots have menthol, the bark is cinnimon, while the leaves are used for teas. They have saffron, marsala, corriandor, pepper, vanilla, nutmeg, jasmin, lavendar, bananas, passionfriut, jackfriut, etc. We had lunch with rice, cassava, king fish, and some spices. We tried ...

Zanzibar, island paradise and 3rd world experience

... this tropical getaway. The humidity is something else to believe, nothing dries, but then one doesn't need much more than a sarong, bikini and slops (wear them because there is a funny little sand-worm worm that can find its way into your toes as two of our party discovered, it itches like CRAZY, but is easily cured with a good dose of VERMOX or three!!) Well holiday over it was back on the "jumpy" flight back to Johannesburg to resume reality and urban life once more until another day.

Party Beach

... It's also more of a 'party beach,' attracting a younger crowd. I am at a beach bar two hours from sunset sipping a rather warm beer. (Refridgeration of some essentials has been sacrificed during the power outage on the islands.) Techno music blasts from a party dhow, a traditional fishing boat converted for tourists. Maasai tribesmen try coolly to push their handicrafts on tourists; most of whom ...
