Kona Bali Kai

We didn't get to see seahorses after all: the seahorse ranch was closed for the weekend. Like a lot of Hawaiians, they take time off on weekends and close at suppertime. Very civilized and humane, and we from the mainland are not used to those kinds of hours! What to do instead with a whole day, since our plane didn't leave until 10:45pm? We …
Today we went to the sea--twice! In the morning, we took a tour on the Atlantis submarine and in the evening, we went on a sunset tour. That's the short version. It's tempting to leave it as the short version because, as Marv says, I'm at risk of writing about the vacation more than having it. On the other hand, I'm still waking up at 5:30 am ... …
Our first sight of Hawaii: acres and acres of black lava in various stages of erosion, but much of it seemingly recent. And the air port is right in the middle of it. Just a little reminder, in case we'd forgotten, that we're on a volcanic isle. Oh, and the volcano is currently active and earthquakes frequent. Pele, the goddess of the volcano, must …
... 8216;seconds’? The Volcano National Park was a highlight as we viewed Halemaumau Crater emitting sulphur dioxide clouds and viewed live time seismographs of volcano activity – with small earthquakes a daily occurrence on the island. We explored an area of previous volcanic lava flow (1959) and a ‘walk through’ lava tube which was fascinating. It felt and looked like something from a Mars landscape. A special treat that evening ...

Interesting factoid, as Ivy of “A.N.T. Farm” might say: Wal-mart carries items, clothes specifically, that are printed with Hawaiian themes. In other words, they tailor their merchandise to the geographic location, at least ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Kona Bali Kai Kailua-Kona
The Kona Bali Kai was VERY outdated. The furniture and carpeting appeared to not have been cleaned or replaced for 25 years. Cockroaches and geckoes (lizards) were seen in our kitchenette and bathrooms. Matresses and bedspreads were very old and stained. The rooms are not sterilized everyday (I wonder if at all). The front desk staff is not present 24 hours (only 8AM-10PM) and the safety and sanity of the guests is left to 1 or 2 lazy security guards. We had problems with youth teams staying at the hotel running around, yelling and lauging all night. The security guard's sollution was to yell "STOP RUNNING" several times from the lobby late at night instead of coming upstairs and disciplining the kids. So between them and the waves, there was (unfortunately) very little relaxing rest.
From the moment we checked in I got a bad feeling about the place. We were instructed to use a code to get in the gate to use their swimming pool which wasn't a great pool to begin with, mine at home is 10 times better. Going up to our room I could not help notice the dirty carpeting and the grounds were very un-kept. Red flags were going up all over the place. Security doors on every room, Security gate to access the pool with a code that gets changed daily which is inconvenient if you did decide to stay. We had a 2 bedroom 2 both ocean view room, you would think this would be great, but NO. The view was nice but the ad says surf that will lull you to sleep, the surf is pounding and sounds like a cannon going off each time it reaches the shore. There is no air conditioning in the ocean front rooms I was told because of the suppossed breeze you will get. It was so humid I was dripping wet within 5 minutes, and you are stuck between a rock and a hard place, because the surf being so loud you have to close the sliding glass door which doesn't allow you to get that wonderful"ocean breeze" they were talking about. I totally agree with the remark made by the folks from Laguna Niguel Ca, this place does scream BUDGET, it is a two star rating which is low 2's in my opinion, but if BUDGET is what you are looking for and don't care then this is the place for you.
We stayed at the Marc Kona Bali Kai for 3 nights from July 5 thru July 8, 2004.
Waterfront condo is great.
We just got back from the Big Island. We stayed 3 nights at this resort. The unit was great. We were right on the ocean. the views and sounds were wonderful. I would recommend this condo.Only problem we had was I was sick while there and as soon as we left I was better. Don't know if something in the unit was the cause of the problem or not. They had damage because of a prvious storm and this may have contributed to a mold problem or something. Overall a great place to stay.
Our unit was not as good as the photos and we were disappointed the minute we walked in the door. It screamed BUDGET. The black grout in the tiles of the bathrooms bothered me all week. We had to call for maintenance the moment we arrived because the ceiling fans didn't function (there is no A.C.). Second bedroom is very tiny and unappealing. Exterior of bldg needs maintenance. There is no real area in front of the building to relax near the water -- the building is too close. The waves were high all week, so you couldn't safely get in the water. The pool is tiny and unappealing because it is blocked by the building. They have security some days to keep other people out of the parking area, but it seemed ineffective. Lots of people who don't stay in the building hang out there. The place had a negative feel to it. We even left early and sacrificed our prepaid remaining nights. There are a lot of great condos with nice grounds, but this is not one of them.
Enjoy the pounding waves
The condo I stayed in was ocean front and it was absolutely fabulous!
The unique and stylish condo was clean and comfortable. It had a full kitchen which made it nice to relax and enjoy home cooked meals on the deck overlooking the beautiful surf. The pounding ocean waves put me to sleep each night as the moon shimmered over the water. Everything in town was nearby within walking distance. I would come back and stay here if I was in town again. Thank you Karen and Bruce for the lovely condo!!!
We stayed here in 2/2000 for our honeymoon. It was not super fancy but the staff were courteous and helpful. Our condo was RIGHT on the ocean and had windows for the walls facing the ocean and the sunsets. There was no air conditioning but with the cool breezes off the ocean, none was needed, and the plus of keeping the windows open was the amazing sound of the waves crashing on shore just below our windows--I've never slept better! We walked onto the rocks in front of the hotel and watched tons of sea turtles. The road it's on is a little busy but there is easy access to restaurants, etc. Would definitely recommend it!
The Kona Bali Kai is an incerdiable vacation get away. The sound of the surf is very relaxing and a soothing to forget the hustle and bustle of a busy life. The ocean is 45 feet from the back door, sea turtles feed close to shore. The grounds are great and the staff friendly and very helpful. The sunsets are post card quility and occure every night. This resort brings a new meaning to "Ocean Frtont" it is paradice on earth.
I highly recommend this wonderful resort.
I've been to Hawaii many times, and stayed in, what the reviewers call, the best hotels the Islands have to offer. I was pleasantly surprised, when I arrived at the Kona Bali Kai. Amazingly clean, beautifully decorated and WHAT A VIEW. It just felt like home, only in Paradise.
The rates were excellent and the service was great. As a matter of fact, I'm going back to Hawaii this year, and while in the Kona area, will be staying at this exceptional hotel again. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone.
This was the worst place we have ever stayed. We arrived at the property and it had such a bad feel to it, We checked into our room which was far from the main building. The unit only had a a/c unit in the living room, which was very far from the bedroom. We went to dinner and came back around 10 pm to find a security guard roaming the property. He informed my husband that there was break-in's during the night while the people were sleeping. Needless to say in the morning we moved to a different hotel- Keahou Resort. Which was wonderful. This property is very misleading and I would not recommend it at all. Also, we did rent a card and it did have roaches in it. We returned it that night and they gave us a upgraded car without bugs.
