Li River Cruise

Today a four-hour, 83km cruise down the river to Yangshuo. Dramatic limestone scenery and verdant hills. Very hazy, but the sun peeked through from time to time. In the afternoon we visited a farmer's house and spoke with the family. Their family had lived there for 14 generations. Their ancestor had done a great service for the Qing Emperor and was granted the right to use the imperial symbols, the dragon and the phoenix, at his house. In the evening we had a special dinner (not ...

... day and we choose to sit outside. We place a wooden table on the patio area and set 4 folding chairs around. While we sit, Wendy starts the lunch preparation.

It's not as rural as I first thought, with a well developed city centre, lots of office buildings, shops, restaurants etc. But it feels so alien not being able to read any of the signs or have a sense of what anything means. It's the closest I can get to imagining what it must be like for someone who is illiterate; complete isolation. Clearly some of the ...

A travel blog entry by samhanson on Apr 09, 2013

Packing packing packing. Part of the joys of travelling as a family of 6. (My new Facebook status.) Thus I spent my final morning in Yangshuo and Daniel took Sam, Lily Rose & Minnie to buy some "tat" at the markets. Ill ask him to report more. Guilin airport is 1 1/2 hours drive from Yangshuo and the minibus journey allowed more insight into life in rural Guanxi province. Despite hazy weather, the dramatic skyward arrowheads of the mountains were still visible and ...

Just outside Yangshuo at the Big Banyan Tree!

So this morning we have made a very difficult decision - but we've decided to leave Xingping earlier than expected. The area is beautiful and the hostel is lovely but we've exhausted what we wanted to see nearby and it doesn't really make sense to bus it backwards and forwards to Yangshuo each day - so we're off to the Big Banyan Tree! However, firstly we decided to head to the local market in Xingping as it only runs on days ending with a 3, 6 or 9. It was a very ...
