The Wonderful WhitSunday Islands

To think I almost blew this off, being too expensive - it is - and the Great Barrier Reef being threatened by pollution not so much from the small human population, only 20 million or so for the entire country, but by the runoff from farms totaling 100 million sheep and 27 million cattle. That's a lot of animal doo doo. Not to mention the stresses put on the reef by tourists like me, and the most serious threat, rising temperatures. A very slight increase in water temperature can kill these r...

Long Island pics

Long Island is situated off the coast of Queensland, near the southern end of the string of islands called the Whitsundays. The first thing that hits you, is the colour of the water. A beautiful blue that looks quite strange. I have read somewhere that it was caused by dissolved silica. We stayed at the very affordable Club Croc. The easiest way to get there from Melbourne is a plane to Brisbane then a plane to Proserpine, a bus to Airley Beach and finally a ferry to Long Island. When we got ...

Whitsunday Islands. Sunday August 17, 2008

Today was spent all day sailing on 'The Camira' -- a sailboat that held about 75 people. Almost everyone who didn't do the three day sailing did this optional. I was on the fence until I found that out. It seemed like sailing was the thing to do at the Whitsundays, probably because there are so many islands in the area. It was chilly and windy, but otherwise an enjoyable day. The trip lasted about ten hours, with two stops. The first was snorkeling at small area of reef. The water was warm, b...

internet is expensive

Sorry no updates lately I've been too busy maxin and relaxin to update this thing. and internet averages about $4 per half hour and thats...too much for me :) so I've been busy- spent 2 days in the rainforest north of Cairns. super cool, saw some disgustingly large spiders. wild rainforest turkeys, who knew there was such a thing? 3 days in Cairns next, I went scuba diving on the great barrier reef for 2 of them and got scuba certified. really the best thing about that was that the scuba inst...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Long Island - Club Croc

It's cheap for a reason

from A TripAdvisor Member
I'm going to be honest because I used tripadvisor reviews to help me when deciding on a place to stay.

This was just my experience, though!

I just got back from Club Croc Long Island. This place is more like a camp/backpackers style than a resort. The whole place is run down and needs an overhaul.

PROS

* Beautiful location. More of a coral beach than sand, though.

* Room credit made it good value and I was able to splurge on a little luxury at the Club Spa

* Club Spa is excellent. It's the same company as Club Med Lindeman Island. Very professional and great treatments.

* Staff were very friendly and helpful.

* Pool area is new. It looks pretty good for 3 star but the surrounding areas (restaurant, games room) ruin it because they're still run down

* Fantasea cruises were excellent. Service was very professional and friendly

* Cute walabies hang around the grounds at night

CONS

* Staff weren't presented well. Their uniforms were untucked polo shirts that looked like they hadn't been washed

* The food was pretty bad. Remember school camp? It's like that.

- Canteen style

- Don't believe the pictures you see

- Not much selection

- Laminex tables with some cheap 80's design on them and plastic chairs

- Tables aren't set with table cloths or anything like that

* The water is not drinkable- and of course bottles cost a fortune

* The grounds are by no means, pristine.

- National Parks are really just dying trees

- Large piles of dirt are just lying around

* The pool is filled with kids

* The pool and beach were way too hot to swim in, it was like a bath so there wasn't much to releive the heat

* The rooms are old and run down

- The key didn't work very well at all, and I struggled every time I had to open the door

- Noisy air con

- Shower had so much mould in the grout, it's disgusting

- Laminex bathroom was falling apart

- Lights are covered in thick dust

- The knob fell off the drawer the minute I tried to open it

- Cheap steal bunk beds and the main bed is two singles put together so it was uncomfortable to use the whole bed

- Dirty plastic champagne glasses were in the room

* No direct ferries between Long Island and the day trips made it inconvenient to have to go back to Shute Harbour, then connect to Long Island. Ferries are infrequent, too.

* Generally no atmosphere

* Don't expect anything 'classy' about this place.

I'm giving it one for friendly service and one for location. Other than that, I wouldn't bother.

My suggestion is that you spend an extra few hundred bucks and have a great time on Hamilton Island. I did a day trip there and was so impressed, it made me regret staying at Long Island.

Amazing Location, Average Resort

from Peter080
Since I gained so much insight from the reviews when planning my honeymoon, I thought I would add my review so as to help others with their planning.

Firstly, this is a wonderful resort, however do not expect 5 star.

The Location is brilliant, the actual resort grounds are very nice and picturesque(they have recently refurbished parts of the resort), and the staff are quite efficient.

However, the rooms are VERY average, and while clean and tidy, certainly live up to their reputation as only 3 1/2 stars.

The restaurant serves nice food(buffet style), however, again, not gourmet. Just good hearty food with plenty of variety. The actual restaurant does need to be refurbished, and would form a wonderful atmosphere if it was. That said, we were happy with the food.

Overall, it forms a great value stay in the Whitsundays, but don't go there with an expectation of 5 star facilities. Certainly though, the location is truly 5 star, with a truly spectacular palm lined beach which looks even better than the photos.

Great location

from Bubbachumps
We spent four days here in the Whitsundays and were impressed with the quality of our beachfront room and the facilities at the resort. The food was also good, with lots of choice and variety. The water on the resort however was disgusting, yet they charged a fortune for bottled water. The restaurant itself however was not very inspiring, which was a shame because with a makeover it could be very atmospheric rather than feeling like a canteen.

The beach has beautiful views and there are some lovely walks on the island. My only criticism would be that the activities were overpriced.

Good location, Average resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
The best feature of this resort is it's location on the stunning whitsunday islands. The resort does have it's problems, the staff are OK but not overly helpful and the food is OK but not brilliant. The rooms seem dated and in need of refurbishment and air conditioners are loud and dated, although all rooms come with a balcony.

Also bear in mind this hotel is used by club 18-30 holidays so late night noise could be an issue, especially for families.

Long Island - Rooms with a View - Fantastic!

from Lynno
My husband and I headed off to Long Island, with more than a little trepidation, having read some, not so flattering, reviews. However, DESPITE, the slightly ordinary weather, and the pool and bar being under construction, we had a marvelous time. The beachfront rooms are definately the go, to have a position directly on the beach for that kind of money is fantastic! The views are magnificent. The rooms are not 5 star but are still really great, cleaned daily and cleaned well. The food was great, the staff VERY friendly and always helpful. The people in the dive school did a magnificent job of training and coaxing the otherwise cautious into an ocean dive, for the most memorable experience ever! Water sports were fabulous too. There are enough activities to keep you occupied if you want some adventure, but its also quiet enough to feel you are away from the madding crowd! Very family friendly, but also great for couples. Long Island has a great beach, better than most of the other resorts in the area. We will definately be returning, if only to see the newly renovated pool and swim up bar!! Well done Long Island.

The Worst Holiday Ever!!!!!!!!!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I have been to many resorts in Australia and to Bora Bora, Tahiti for our honeymoon, but Club Croc, Long Island was by far the worst holiday we have ever had.

The room we stayed in was shocking...the toilet and shower were so grotty I had to force myself to use it, the air condiotioner was foul.

The pools left a lot to be desired. The "swim up bar" pool was always full of kids and it looked like a cess pool, very swamp like.

The food was awful, and many times we went to bed hungry as we refused to eat. But on the good side the staff were nice.

We had met an English tourist, and as Australian's we were very embarassed and tried to explain to her that most Aussie resorts were not like this.

On our last day there, we went to breakfast and as I was getting something to drink a big cockroach flew onto my shoulder and I and two other girls standing next to me were horrified!!!

If you like your holidays cheap and nasty, then this is the place for you.

Good Budget accomodation

from A TripAdvisor Member
Good budget accomodation for couples and families. The buffet meals were great and there were lots of things to do during the day. The rooms were Ok although a bit on the shabby side but it was sufficient. Services was above average, the staff were all young and friendly.

Heaven on a budget.

My husband & I have just returned from a 'romance package' holiday at Club Crocodile Long Island. The resort was fabulous, the room was very clean & nicely furnished (OK it is a room not a suite, but with these surroundings you only go there to sleep anyway). The beachfront rooms are just a few steps over manicured lawn to the beach. Customer service, restaurant, housekeeping & groundstaff were all very friendly & pleased to help or chat. The resort had heaps of activities, the island was beautiful, the weather great. The buffet meals at the restaurant were all excellent with lots of variety. We had lots of extras in our package that made it the perfect holiday escape. There were families at the resort as well, but the couples were housed at the opposite side of the main buildings and so it was Very quiet and peaceful near the room. A short stroll through the gardens to all the action. We couldn't have asked for anything better & the price was very reasonable. Well worth the trip!!

Most beautiful resort location ever

from TheTravelingHobo
I've never stayed at a room with a view as nice as this Club Crocodile. Perfect water, amazing sunsets, and to top it off, the resort was great! The staff was overly friendly, and there was sooooooo much to do that I really wish I could have been there longer (only stayed 3 days). The rooms were perfectly clean and very comfortable! And I'd definitely suggest getting the beachfront rooms (most rooms are beachfront at the resort). If you're ever in the area, I definitely recommend it!

Mouldy resort

from A TripAdvisor Member
Bathroom was so smelly and full of mould. Airconditioner was extremly loud and smelly and was covered on 5mm thick of mould. grounds and gardens were very untidy. food was great. Staff very friendly people who like the accomodation to be clean and mould free, give this reosrt a miss.
