... New Year. Throughout the day we had heard the occasional spluttering of firecrackers but that was about it. Quite a few of the businesses in the town did appear to be closed though. Along with others, my usual banana pancake stall had disappeared. Traditionally people travelled to be with their families at New Year and so I guess that was where they had gone. On Thursday morning we were to go to a Muslim school called Fai Tha. Having got on well with my colleagues the previous afternoon, and confident that they would this morning show up on time, I was feeling a little less anxious about the day.

The girls in the front desks are always the brightest and best behaved, it seems, whilst the boys at the back are the slowest and naughtiest.
