Over the mountains and into Ho An

October 21, 2009

Hue - Hoi An (B/D)

This morning, take a scenic drive to Hoi An. En route, stop in Danang, Vietnam’s fourth largest city with a visit to the Cham Museum. The open-air collection of Cham sculpture is the finest in the world. Pass through the Marble Mountains. Upon arrival in Hoi An, check-in at the Life Heritage Resort 4-star.

This morning the Monsoon rains have hit us.... we have thunder that has been going on for hours and the rain has not stop sin...

Hoi An Vietnam January 30 & 31 2009 I have writing these entries daily, intending to copy them into the travel blog when I find a reliable internet connection. Every day here has been so full and so exotic that I have not wanted to spend my time on the internet. We flew from Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and then to Danang for car transfer to Hoi An. We were surprised to arrive at a large fancy new airport terminal (the international one) then we walked over to the domestic termina...

Hoi An: Un pueblo encantador y ¡Ropa a medida!!!

We were up at 7 am to shower and pack. I was able to have some cornflakes and peanut butter with the soy and raisins that I purchased. Bill had some baguette and watermelon. We walked to the post office to use FedEx or DHL to send a package home, but they were not open. So, we are entrusting our valuables to the Vietnam postal system. We were assured that it would take a mere 2 - 3 months for our package to arrive for $20 for 3 kgs. I had to fill out 5 forms for sending one package. Back at t...

Something Old, Something New

Bill was awake and sneezing at 2:30 and stayed up until 5:00 watching TV. We woke up at 6:20 and had a wonderful shower, followed by an amazing buffet. Funny what a bit of money can do! I had some rye bread with lime, pineapple, mango and mandarin marmalade. They were all good! I had an omelette with peppers, ham, mushrooms, olives and tomatoes, some potatoes, grilled mushrooms, sausage and grilled tomatoes. I had a small scoop of all bran with dried apricots (red, yellow and green), raisins ...

Cheer Up Your Bum

We watched a documentary about Indochina on Discovery. It was very interesting. We went to breakfast and missed the second half of the documentary... But it was worth the sacrifice! I had a muffin with coconut spread with mandarin and lime marmalade, whole wheat bread with salami, cheese, tomato, basil and a bit of balsamic dressing with lots of garlic, crepe with banana, sapodilla, mango and cinnamon and sugar. Bill had watermelon, a croissant, cheese salami, crepe with cinnamon and sugar an...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Life Resort Hoi An

It made our trip

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Life Resort is a real jewel. Yes it is pricey but well worth it. The location could not have been more perfect...riverside and a quick walk into town.

The food was superb. The pool was exquisite and just so refreshing after a gruelling day of sightseeing. The rooms were spotless, gorgeous and worth every penny. I understand that there were rooms that were more expensive then those we had but ours were just wonderful.

Breakfast was grand and was the best we experienced in our 2 week stay all over Vietnam.

The staff was exceptionally professional and helpful. It ended up being a mid visit stay but at the end of our trip we agreed that both Hoi An and the hotel were the high points. They even directed us to a tailor who made better copies then the originals we brought along.

Nice but the good rooms are overpriced

from fearg
This is a nice place to stay in Hoi An and benefits from being walking distance from the old town. The rooms are modern and clean, well designed in a modern theme. We stayed in the suite which was fantastic with a private balcony and spacious living area and two bathrooms. TV and DVD player for those who want to retire to their room for a night to watch a movie.

We first had booked one of the other rooms but did not like it because of the strange design. For some reason the balconies that have a river view are not private, they sit in the outside corridor of the hotel. This means that you have no privacy when sitting outside and when in your room you have to close the shutters of your room if you want a private moment. If they put the room access at the back and left the balconies as private it would be much better. I guess it is a difference in cultures as in Vietnam there is not so much separation for private space as we do in the west.

The only let down of the hotel was the pool & restaurant. The pool looks great in the brochures and on the Internet. However its about 3 feet deep and very hard to swim in for this reason. It was also rather cold.

The restaurant was ok but way overpriced for what it was. Billed as east west fusion it was more like classic french/european/western dishes being cooked by an Asian chef, who missed the mark on some of them. The wine list was very overpriced compared to similar gourmet aspiring restaurants in Hanoi and HCMC. We ate here because for the first nights the town was flooded after the river burst its banks. When we tried the good restaurants in town after it had dried out we found the food to be better and cheaper.

The service in this resort is patchy. The fount desk staff are great & very helpfully, as were the room staff. But the restaurant the service was terrible. We ordered pre dinner cocktails and they both arrived 1/2 hour later during the starter and contained several mosquitoes. We were asked about 8 times during out meal if we were enjoying it, very disorganized and not well managed at all. I think the hotel manager needs to spend more time watching this aspect of the hotel.

Splendid!

Booked a standard room online for our stay in Hoi An. Upon arrival, we knew we were in for a treat. Welcome drink in hand, we were led to our room, which was spacious, tastefully decorated in a modern/minimalist style with a touch of tropical. Beautiful gardens and setting on the riverfront. Great pool for lounging around all day, good breakfast, and easy access to town by walking, complimentary bicycles or taxis. They also have a on-site spa, and shuttles to the beach, of which we did not avail ourselves. Probably the best accomodations I experienced in all of Vietnam (and I stayed at a number of 4 and 5 star resorts/hotels). Can't wait to return.

Quiet oasis on the town's edge

from pointerhead
We stayed at the Life resort for 3 nights based on other Tripadvisor recommendations. After a week of travelling to Halong Bay, and mountain biking taking the overnight train to and from Sapa, and the chaos of Hanoi, the Life was a welcome relief. The hotel is immaculate, along the river, just at the edge of town. Convienient walk to the market (5 minutes, about 10 to the bridge).

Our junior suite had 2 settes on its porch, and inside chairs,a sofa and desk, and a large (queen or king) bed. Luxurious bathroom, adequate AC (unusual in Vietnam). Extensive breakfast buffet included with room rate. Minimalist decor, absolutely spotless. The staff spoke English well and was very polite and helpful.

There is a beautiful pool on site, though no workout room. There is an onsite spa for massage, manicures, etc which we did not use.

We ate and shopped in town, but were happy to avoid the vendors once we entered the resort's property. In town, you are often approached by vendors when walking and especially while dining in restaurants, unless you opt for a balcony seat.

We rented a motorbike to visit My Son (takes about 1 hour if you don't get lost or flats!), and went to the beach in Hoi An which is about 5 km from town. There are many restaurants with beach chairs, but you're constantly accosted by vendors. Passed by the Riverside Resort, which seemed a very inconvient location, halfway between the beach and town, and too far to walk to either.

The Life Resort is pricier than most hotels in Hoi An. We booked thru "travel-to-vietnam.com" and got a discounted rate. But at that stage in our journey, paying extra to avoid hassles and motorbike noise was well worth it. I would definitely return.

Best Hotel in Hoi An

from A TripAdvisor Member
Wow! The Life Resort is a serene oasis in the heart of the quaint town of Hoi An. After a day of exploring, shopping and dining in town, The Life Resort was the perfect place to come back to. The staff was always helpful, kind and available. The food in all of the restaurants and bar areas was delicious, and the spa services helped our tired travelers' bodies relax. There is a "Zen" quality about this place does not come through in most hotels. The rooms were immaculate, great AC, large bed/living areas with the most welcoming porches. Not only that, but just wandering around the grounds is enough to make traveling into a true vacation. Stay here soon- there is no way the rates and promotions will be the same once people start discovering the beauty of the Life Resort.

Beautiful small touches

The resort is lovely - extremely comfortable, beautiful small touches, the most warm welcoming staff I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Our stay here was very enjoyable. This is such a gorgeous hotel and location. The food was delicious and the service gracious. Warm accommodating. Attention to details is excellent. Life Resort Hoi An is highly recommended.

Jewel In The Crown

from A TripAdvisor Member
If Hoi An is the jewel in the crown in Vietnam then the Life Resort is the Jewel for Hoi An. Great location in the old town. The hotel is only one year old and has been built in a tradtional French Colonial Style. The rooms are split level and very large. All rooms had a porch with day beds. The restuarants dinner was one of the best we meals we had in Vietnam and very resonably priced. A lovely hotel were you can expolor the joys of Hoi An with ease and then return to its Oasis.

Life is Great

from A TripAdvisor Member
From the minute you drive into the Hotel's front gate, you breath a sigh of comfort. The staff welcome is warm with the biggest smiles and we found them to service all of our requirements and needs. The rooms are nothing short of Fantastic. The hotel povides many varieties of food, from local cuisine to western themes. The hotel is conveniently located at the eastern end of the ancient city of Hoi An. Would not hesitate to return to this Hotel. We are experienced world travellers, especially through out south east asia and rate this hotel in our top 3.

A True Oasis

from tundergarth
This lovely hotel on the edge of the town is really special. The rooms are beautiful. The staff is wonderful. The restaurant and Cafe are delightful and thewhole package is simply tranquil. We were in Hoi An 10 years ago; fell in love with the village but hated the available accomodations. Now there is an accomodation that Hoi An deserves. We loved the Life Resort.

A Slice of Heaven

from Thebutler
This was the most beautiful hotel I have stayed in. The location of the hotel is fantastic, Just a few mintues walk into the centre of town on the bend of the river. The colonial buildings fit perfectly into the towns surrounding. The hotel rooms are very large and well appointed, while the swimming pool is one of the nicest I have ever seen. The breakfast was delicious and the BBQ around the pool was a nice change from eating the same Vietnamese food during my trip.
