Luang Pra Bang, UNESCO World Heritage site. We've spent the last ten days here, originally we were going to just stay a couple of days and then head off to The Plain of Jars but within the first couple of days of being here Sam was struck with a nasty stomach bug and had to spend a few days recovering. She's now feeling better, a few days holed up watching HBO and drinking Sprite has done both our systems wonders. It's been nice to stay in one place for more than a night and if you're going ...
Luang Pra Bang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep batchelomezThe Lao Spirit Resort sat facing a huge mountain range. Five separate bungalows with their own balcony and outside showers. After some of the guest houses we'd stayed in at Luang Prabang this was pure luxury. We whiled away the days reading books, playing cards and gazing at the mountains or the river below us. At night monkeys and all sorts of strange jungle noises could be heard. One day we went for a walk to the local village. On the way there were many leaves that had fallen from the tea...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep forgetnadeauWe finally managed to rouse ourselves from easy lazy Luang Prabang days and travelled up the Nam Khan [river] to Lao Spirit for a spot of trekking and elephant mahouting. We'd emailed the place from UK, and contacted them from Luang Prabang, but they seem to be only half expecting us. Lots of smiling but very little info was forthcoming about our trekking guide etc. Our stilt house, however, is amazing. A vast place cantilevered out above the river bank. From the verandah there's a matchless ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep parryWhat a lot has happened since our last post. We've been to a waterfall and swum in its many turquoise limestone pools (not many things genuinely deserve the colour tag "turquoise", but this one was a dead cert). We've been on a 15km mountain bike ride to the Lao Spirit Resort elephant camp. We've ridden on elephants (both sitting on a special elephant seat and proper bareback style - though why I had to take my t-shirt off, I'm not sure), and then took the elephants down to the river to wash ...

Take the same chopsticks you just used to grab the raw meat, (I know I know, cross contamination is a foreign word, a foreign concept, if it doesn't exist here than it must not be real.) and grab the now cooked meat out the vessel of boiling water. Throw that onto your little creation wrapped in lettuce. Let it cool while you grab a stiff ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep tex25... seen as far as scenery goes. Especially around Vang Vieng where monoliths jutted hundreds of feet into the air covered in vegetation with a lazy rivers winding through them. It was a site to see. I plan on stopping there on the way back through for a night or two. We passed a lot of small roadside villages that only consisted of 8 or 9 teak or bamboo huts. Each village had one water spout that had been by some proud NGO from either Singapore, Australia, France, or the States ...
Luang Prabang, Lao Peoples Dem Rep tex25... dinner and drinks in a local restaurant en masse. Apparently it is indeed a small World, or at least a small Asia.
We shared a Laos barbeque, and a few hours later solved the ultimate equation of Australians + Irish + Chloe = 12 pitchers of beer.
I had a hazy recollection that the last, and, lest we forget, first time I’d met Carl I’d invited myself to cook a barbeque for him, his friends and family at his house in Perth. Frankly, I’ ...
