Historical Traveler Reviews Blue & Green The Lake Spa Resort Vilamoura
5 star location but 3 star service
We stayed here for 12 nights in August with our 3 children aged 8,6 and 3. We were recommended by our travel agent, even though the hotel has only been open a year. We are well travelled and always stay at 5 star resorts.
The location is fabulous, next to a lake and very quiet and peaceful.
There are 3 pools, all extremely child friendly including a beach pool.
The rooms are modern and clean and the decor is tasteful and contemporary throughout the hotel.
The marina and beach are both a short walk away, the beach is amazingly clean and the marina has a wealth of mid-priced restaurants which are great for the kids to eat at.
The food in the hotel restaurants is very nice, buffet breakfast with everything you would expect, we had the buffet dinner twice, which was also lovely and Fusion restaurant was delicious.
The service really let the hotel down, the staff did not seem to be up the job of serving guests who are used to a high level of service.
Although the food is lovely it is very pricey to eat in the hotel. It cost us (family of 5) 170 euros for dinner, whereas we could eat in the marina for 50 euros.
Food by the pool is disappointing and not much variety for lunch every day.
Not enough umbrellas by the pool and advisable to reserve your beds with towels before breakfast.
No information pack in the hotel room regarding room service or information about the hotel. I constantly felt like I had to find things out for myself instead of the staff being helpful and giving out guest information.
To summarise, the hotel grounds and buildings are beautiful and it is a lovely relaxing place to be but we did feel very let down by the poor slow service and some of the staff don't have the right attitude to be working in a classy 5 star resort.
We spoke to the manager about our concerns and got a free bottle of champagne. They are willing to listen to comments and seem to WANT to get it right but just keep missing a little bit. Hopefully the service will get better as the hotel gets older, as they have got everything else right. We probably would return as it was so easy with the kids and Vilamoura is a lovely place for a holiday.
It has the reputation of being one of the nicest hotels in the area and I would recommend going there, but be prepared to complain if you need to!
Good and Bad
Just returned from a 12-night stay in a 1-bedroom apartment with my husband and 2 kids (aged almost 4 and 10 months). My in-laws joined us for 5 days and stayed in a standard garden view room.
We've been staying in 5 Star hotels around the world for the past 10 years. We have been to the Sheraton Algarve on numerous occasions, but thought we would give this hotel a whirl this year. The hotel's location and the option of an apartment suited us better because we were travelling with a baby.
The hotel is beautiful and everything is fresh and new.
The location is extremely convenient - only a 5 minutes walk to Villamoura marina with plenty of good restaurants and nice shops and only 5 minutes from Falesia beach.
The apartments are ideal for families - oven, microwave, hob, dishwasher, fridge / freezer.
The beach swimming pool is great for children - clean, safe, fun and WARM.
The car park is underground and runs under all parts of the hotel - go down in the nearest lift and you are immediately at your car.
Laundry rooms are located off the car park - washers, tumble driers (5 euros per cycle), irons and ironing boards.
The grounds around the swimming pools are small, as a consequence, sun loungers and parasols are limited. You need to go and "reserve" your sun beds before 10am midweek (even earlier at the weekends!)
The pool area attendants can be unhelpful and inconsistent, both in trying to find you a parasol for the kids and in restricting the number of towels given depending who was asking (I was told one per person, my father-in-law was routinely given 2 per person without question).
The service is inconsistent and slow with regards to bellboys, room service, housekeeping and restaurants.
Although the apartments are advertised as "fully serviced", they didn't have all the amenities / services you would expect with a 5 Star hotel room - no hairdryer, no bathrobes, no hotel directory, no room service menu and no turndown service.
On the day we arrived, there was a private party / concert going on in and around the hotel - this meant that one of the restaurants was shut, the decked walkway to the apartments was blocked by PA equipment, there were electrical cables snaking across the pool area and sound checks went on all day. To top it off, the LOUD music went on until 3 or 4 am - it didn't disturb me, but woke my husband up.
In summary - it looks like a 5 star hotel, but doesn't act like a 5 star hotel. It may get better as they get more experienced.
Contemporary & Modern
My wife and I stayed at The lake resort in June 06 for 5 days, we booked a lake view room, on our arrival we were upgarded to a sea view room, which was higher, bear in mind the hotel is only 5/6 floors so you aren't in the clouds!
Overall we were very impressed with the hotel, it only opened in Oct 05 so as you can imagine everything is very new and in perfect working order and looks exactly like it does on the internet.
The hotel is very contemporary with wooden floors, linen curtains, sandstone bathrooms leather chairs etc.
The rooms are fairly spacious with ample wardrobe space and very modern bathrooms, each room has 27inch samsung flatscreen tv's and the beds are very big & comfy.
The breakfast are buffet style as you would expect with full English, fruits, pastrys etc.
Beers cost €5 and cokes €3 and a steak sandwich by the pool would set you back €10
The only thing that I could say raised an eyebrow was that the hotel wasn't very full, so while this is great for relaxing and getting a bed by the pool it can make the restaurants a little empty and devoid of atmosphere, this also includes the bar.
The reason for the lack of people might have been the fact the world cup was due to start in a week and we went out of school holidays or perhaps because the place is so new it isn't well known. But one thing it's not beacuse of the hotel itself.
So in summary if you are looking to stay in Villamora then you must stay here, it is child friendly and I think it will suit young or old trendy couples.
ps It is a 4 min walk to the beach.
We have just returned from a well earned break - without our five children. The hotel is superb. The bedrooms are large, well designed and immaculately clean. We asked for a double bed and ended up with a fantastic 2 metre by 2 metre, unbelievably comfortable bed! The towels were changed twice a day. The bathroom, which is separate from the WC and bidet, is unusually designed and forms part of the bedroom with sliding doors all around it allowing you to watch tv and look out over your balcony ath the panaoramic views.
The staff are all courteous and go out of their way to attend to your every need. On two occassions they were happy to prepare food for us that was not on the menu. The hotel is only in its second season having opened 10 months ago and management are very keen to please and welcome suggestions from guests as to what would make their stay more memorable - whats more they listen and act on comments made.
Ok so the food, mini bar and drinks around the pool are a little expensive but in keeping with a five star hotel. And the food is always freshly prepared etc. No shortage of sunbeds or umbrellas made this hotel a pleasure to stay in- no early morning dash to the pool to lay towels on a bed!
As i said we went without our kids but there were several young families there and I have to say the hotel run a fantastic kids club with several staff for many hours each day and from what we could see they treated all the kids like youngr siblings always ready to dive in the pool and play with them. It was a pleasure to see.
The beach pool, the third pool at the hotel is a salt water pool which was a real hit with the young families as it is very unusual. The beds are set on sand which runs about a third of the way into the pool before becoming a normal pool making it a perfect place to keep an eye on the younger kids.
Entertainment was very low key with live singers and musicians in the bar each night.
The marina is a 5 minute walk away and offers lots of busy bars and restaurants.
We would highly recommend this hotel.

my wife, one yaer old baby and myself stayed here in mid june, we had a panoramic apartment with amazing views, the place is beautiful and the staff are very friendly and attentative, with no request not satisfied. the walks alone around the lake were fantastic as were the interesting seating areas outside for evening drinks, the restaurants were all fantastic and the fusion restaurant was our favourite. my wife enjoyed the spa and was well looked after there.
the beach is only a few minutes a way throught he grounds of the resort.
the marina is less than ten minutes walk and there are some fantastic restaurant there such as il lamparo and zu yi among many others, also bars a plenty.
we would highly recommend this resort as the best in Vilamoura and by far the most beautiful.
THE Place to Stay in Vilamoura
This place is awesome. The staff is amazing, the view is amazing, the pools are amazing. The beach is a five minute walk away - it is the cleaniest beach I have ever seen. The price for food and drinks are rather expensive for Portugal, but I've paid way more for food that wasn't even 1/2 as good as this place in other resorts. The breakfast buffet is incredible, it has everything you could ever want to eat from waffles to omlettes, fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, etc. They have 3 pools, one is salt water, one is unheated and the other is heated. It is a 10 minute walk to the marina where there are great restaurants and fun pubs. We stayed here for our honeymoon and would definately stay here again. The rooms are large, the beds comfy, the spa is beautiful. We had no complaints at all. Get a panaromic view - you won't be disappointed.
My wife and I plus another couple spent 4 days in this wonderful resort. Accommodations were great, the service impeccable. Well worth the money we paid. Keep up the good work!

We were excited on entering this plush, grand 5 Star Hotel. We had parted with a lot of money to spend a week in the sun. After been escorted to our apartment we found that there was no information pack, commonly distributed in other hotels, informing us on the facilities. Lunch at the pool restaurant, 1 hour for a cold toasted ham & cheese, service a joke. People served raw chicken! Kids club not operational, no equipment. Cheaper to feed & water yourself by the MARINA, hotel prices extortionate, coke, coffee etc. GAming facilities not operational e.g. pool tables at 45 degree angles. Staff excuses in response to complaints pathetic. NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!!
5 star Quality hotel in fabulous location
Having been reccommmended this hotel by our trusted travel company Design Holidays , who heartily suggested we visit the Lake Resort in Vilamoura.
They have not got it wrong yet !
The hotel & spa were superb and the location was 'to die for' with such close proximity to the marina / beach !
The rooms were fabulous and the vistas quite something !
To not return would be a travesty !
We stayed at The Lake Resort in Oct 2005. It had only recently opened and was far from full, although it was fully staffed. We had originally been booked into a different hotel but our travel agent recommended we give this one a go. We are forever in her debt as we had our mostluxurious holiday ever (and we've stayed in sme nice places!!). We stayed in a pool view suite that had 2 bathrooms, a living area and a bedroom with 2 balconies overlooking the beach pool and Vilamoura Marina. The staff were more than attentive and the place itself is beautiful. There's a pool that is a beach!! The sunbeds are on sand that gently slopes into the water but then there is a filter half way and then it's clear pool water. There are two more pools, one of which is heated. The hotel has direct access to a great beach, about a 4 min walk but really you don't need to leave. Breakfast is fabulous, fresh fruit, cereals, meat, cheese, bread, yoghurts, juice and then hot food cooked to order. Very reasonably ( for 5 star) priced lunch menu, brought to you by the pool if required!! Beautiful bars next to the hotel lobby. We even tried the in house baby sitter (first time for us)and she was great. The hotel is a 2 min walk from the marina where there are loads of nice restaurants and bars.
We had a fabulous weeks holiday even though the weather could have been better. The staff in the hotel were superb and it also has a wonderful Spa which needs to be seen to be believed.

Alvor was a treat. Arriving at about lunchtime we went to look at the Aire which was huge open and pretty full. Parked up by the beach instead and had Lunch and LUDO had a run before deciding to go to a site. We stayed for two nights in the 'tranquil' part of the camp. We were in a verdant hollow surrounded by green with our own BBQ almond trees and beautiful birds. Weather was a bit drizzly but it ...

As we approached, a dog suddenly came running across the road, as it happened though right on the pedestrian crossing. I shouted to the driver to watch out and he mamaged to stop. But the dog also stopped, in the middle of the road right on the pedestrian safe crossing point. The driver waited for the dog to go but he wouldn't. He just stood there and looked at the ...

So we are now flying over northern Canada on our way back home. This instalment of the European travel adventure is coming to an abrupt end. Our last left blog was posted as we were leaving Faro Portugal on our way to Cadiz Spain. Cadiz is a must stop if you are interested in early European settlements as it is the longest inhabited city in Europe. The hotel was right in the centre of the old town so we were able to walk ...

The next campsite Aquadulce Bellena on the coastline of Jerez de la Frontera was completely deserted and finding a pitch for the mud splattered Burkemobil and with the sun now splitting the stones we went for a walk along the fabulous, white sandy beach.
