I may be married? as of today in Suva, Fiji

I may or may not be married at this point, according to local Fijiian custom, but before I get into that let me give you some other details first.

Yesterday at 7:45AM our ship crossed the International Date Line and jumped forward 1 day. I am now 1 day and 7 hours ahead of CST at home.

I woke this morning to the sound of a military band playing outside my room (right on ...

Bula Suva!

... with some kasava (root crop) on the side and rice. We had a girl talk, while Atu was out, with Maurisci. She referred to Atu as master sometimes and wouldn't eat until she was told she could, which was crazy to me but there's not really as much human rights as there is in the U.S. Maurisci asked us questions about Barack Obama and we talked about celebrities and her daughter who is 18. She told us that all of us girls should get married by 25 because after that we will lose our glow. The ...

Working too hard and nothing much to report

... 1 day and you can see what happens when we go away for the weekend with the dust. Luckily you can pay $5 for it to be washed and vacuumed.
The Coke games came and went in April. Pam's school had 6 athletes competing.
Last weekend we went to Wananavu Resort, about 2.5 hours driving north. It was amazing. The water colour is so clear with all the different shades of blue. Have to get back there to go diving soon. Pam found herself a new 4 legged friend.

... resort than the others and a beautiful room too. More amazing food and Jo even ventured to do something!! She did a dive which I know took all her might to get out of her hammock and do he he :-) When she got back we all had to go for an afternoon siesta as even her telling us about it made us knackered. When we got up we had a banquet of food to get through and the entertainment for the night was the village school children, it was soooo sweet. Unfortunately ...

Captain Cook's Footsteps - Part 2

... antiseptics or antidiarrheals (for Fijians, seeing a doctor can be very expensive and, most of the time, the nearest medical facility is hours away), the native bamboo trees, the silver ferns and many other species whose names we've already forgotten. The nice thing about Fiji's jungle is that there aren't any terrifying animals or insects lying around waiting to get you. Except maybe for one species of spider that can provide a rather nasty bite, all the rest ...

Winter is here in Fiji

... a lot of tournaments. There is a Japanese girl who has just arrived here for 2 years on a table tennis scholarship, so her and PK are going to do the school clinics. Still no paid work for her yet, however she is now the coach of the hockey and netball teams, so they taking advantage of her free labour. Hopefully it will all pay off soon. The only exciting news is the new food court in the big shopping centre here. This centre is ...

Working in Fiji for 4 months & playing Rugby

... lights were off we could see outside but people could not see inside. The potential thief had climbed up the drain pipe and was sneaking around trying to get into every door or window without any luck as the windows and doors had bars and grill gates on them. When I saw him sneaking around I woke up all the volunteers so they could see what was going on and called the police but by the time the police had come the thief had long go such was the efficiency of the Fijian ...
