Historical Traveler Reviews of Konavillageresort Kailua-Kona
Most romantic place in the world

thatched roof bungalow's, referred to as "hale", line the ocean on your choice of white sand or black lava sand beaches. We spent our honeymoon here in Sept. 2001. I was planning a trip to Tahiti but couldnt spend two weeks on our honeymoon, so I found Kona Village, which greatly resembles Tahiti and the Polynesian lifestyle. Dinner is gourmet, and excellent, as well as the lunch buffet. You have the choice to dine outside, near the shore if you like.
I would describe our perfect day there as; coffee on our porch as the sun rises, swimming along side the sea turtles near the shore, a little snorkeling on the premise, relaxing in a hammock at sunset, and walking down the torch lit path to dinner. Their LUAU is the best on the island.
Our plan was to spend 3 days at Kona and 4 days at Mauna Lani Bay. On our first day at Mauna Lani Bay, we were sad and went back to Kona Village to enjoy the rest of our Honeymoon. It is definately a special place to us and we will be returning soon.

My husband and I were in great need to just get away, and Kona Village gave us the "get" and the "away" we so desired. Our flight was delayed out of LA so we we ended up 6 hours late getting into Kona Village. By the time we got there (around 11:00p.m.) we were the ones apologizing as they offered they're famous punch and a beautiful deli style selection plate that we were so happy to receive! That my friends is the way our trip began and it just got better from there! Mind you, this is no commercial cruise. Going to Kona Village is like visiting family. The staff is friendly, helpful, and willing to point you in the right direction or make suggestions as you request. I couldn't ask for better accomodations or such a wonderful vast array of yummys! I should tell you this review is based on my last trip and I'm currently planning my next!!! Happy Kona Village to anyone that really wants to get away from it all!

I went to Kona Village resort six months ago, and I can't stop talking about it. The food was superior. Fresh seafood, and fruit higlighted my lunch. While the more elegant dinner provided me delicious dishes. The staff was extremely helpful and curteous. They even provided me with a box lunch when I decided to explore the island. The beach was great and the staff their was full of information. All and all, I plan on returning with my wife next year.
Wonderful resort!

We recently returned from a week at Kona Village. This was our 4th visit in the last 10 years. What a great place to totally unwind! You truly feel like you are in your own little coccoon. The staff is great, the hale's are very nice...the one we were in could use an update though. Although we noticed that they were remodeling several down the road from us. Snorkeling was great, food was great... September is really a great time to go there if you want total quiet...no kids.
Perfect honeymoon spot

I accessed this website trying to figure out how my husband and I could afford to return to Kona Village. We loved it there. We spent a week there last September for our honeymoon. We were there during the whole 9/11 debacle and, in spite of the angst, it was magical. We loved the food...especially the sashimi. The staff was sensitive and attentive. Our accomodations were lovely. We met people from the resort next door who felt "sorry" that we weren't at their resort, but Kona Village is the perfect Hawaiian resort for us...quiet and eclectic. I am sad for "Silicon" that their stay was not what was expected.
Kona Village Resort

I don't normal take time to rebut posts on the net but Silicon Valley's review of Kona Village was a bit biased. First, he was forthcoming in telling us that his trip got off to a bad start. Next, food, accommodations and facilities are relative and often colored by emotions. One man's feast is another's garbage. All I can say was my visit to Kona Village Resort was great.
The food was very good. I've been to better restaurants in the world but not at a hotel or resort. The price of the food is on the high side but I found that true of all Hawaii. The lunch buffet was very good. Fresh oysters, king crab, and great lox and bagels were just the beginning, oh and the fresh fruit!
The stuff was always friendly and courteous. They treated me like the repeat customers. I especially found the staff at the beach to be wonderful people. They talked to me for close to an hour about the fish I was seeing in the lagoon.
The towels were always present and clean.
I had no problems with the beach, bugs, snorkel gear or surly staff.
I stayed at a lagoon hale and found it to be excellent. Being in your own hale with no elevators or corridors was perfect. The lagoon did not stink. It was very pretty, especially at night. True, there were birds and birds do make noise for brief time in the morning and evening but that is part of the Island. I like having a bit of nature at a resort instead of a anufactured sterile Hawaiian landscape.
I intend to go back again next year. What more can I say.

I stand by my first set of comments on this place!! Different strokes for different folks, I guess, but when you go to Hawaii, you do expect a decent beach. We chose this resort because of its "rusticity." and had no problem without TV (I don't have one at home either) and I'm not a golfer. But I do expect truth-in-advertising, courtesy and good resort management. I've travelled all over the world and this is the only place I've ever been royally ripped off.
Kona Village: Don't Believe the Detractor

My husband and I stayed at Kona Village for a week at the same time as the reviewer who had countless complaints (February 2002). I can assure everyone that our experience was completely different. (Perhaps it was because we weren't looking to find fault with everything.) The beach is great for swimming and also for snorkeling (it's only rocky, meaning there are pebbles, for about a foot off shore); the towels were never "torn"; the food was great, particularly at dinner; the pond was not "smelly"; and the grounds were awesome--particularly nice to take a walk after dinner. Kona Village felt like a private hideaway; it was small, secluded, and romantic. The best place we've ever stayed, and we travel frequently. Perhaps management listened to the detractor's complaints and reacted how everyone else should: in one ear, out the other.
A RARE JEM IN PARADISE

I have been coming to the Kona Village for almost 20 years and have consistently found it to be one of the most relaxing places on earth. The food is awesome, the staff friendly and personable, the ocean spectacular.
If you expect TVs with in-room movies, room service, phones with data ports, etc... go somewhere else. This is like staying in old Hawaii 100 years ago. Stay in a grass thatched hut overlooking the ocean. The most stressful part of your day will be deciding whether you should finish the great novel you are reading or slip into the warm ocean for a snorkel. If you come here you will quickly learn why MANY of their guests have been returning for generations.
I started coming here as a teenager with my parents over 20 years ago. When I returned last year with my wife and new baby, I was pleasantly surprised to find two other 40ish adults who I had met here ages ago when we all came with our families. The place it that special. How many resorts to you know that have that kind of a following.
Let go of your usual idea of a vacation and give this place a try. You will be thrilled that you did!
And finally for the other reviewer who complained about the KVR, next time stay at the Mauna Kea Resort where you can spend your day with thousands of other complaining travelers who yearn for in-room movies, golf courses, and a stale chocolate on their pillow.
HORRIFIC!!

Don't go here! Outrageously overpriced, grossly exaggerated facilities, bad food, poor service . . you get the picture! Bad service started at the airport when the Kona Village staff didn't have our names on their pickup list and just left us standing at the curb, had to get our own taxi. There is no beach to speak of, the towels were torn and not replenished, there's not enough snorkel gear for the guests and the beach staff was rude and abrasive. There is only a tiny rocky area suitable for swimming. The children's program was poorly run, stingy on materials and fun, and the staff catered to a few repeat guests. Lunch is cheesy outdoor buffet, mediocre food, replete with birds and bugs, and surly staff. The "lagoon" huts front a small smelly green pond. The resort is poorly managed and in need of capital infusion. Highlight of the week was the snorkel boat trip (extra fee) OFF the resort. Complained to management while there and nothing was done. Take your money and go next door to the beautiful 4 Seasons.
