Kings Canyon, Northern Territory, Australia 0156At Kings Canyon we had a great time. We went for a 6km walk though the Canyon. It was really nice and loud because of all the helicopters going over. We walked down into the "Garden of Eden" and had lunch there. We also met some new friends at the campsite. We had lots of fun with them. By the way GO DEES! Two wins in a row!
Kings Canyon, Northern Territory, Australia arnottAfter stocking up on supplies, we took a four hour drive to Kings Canyon. We set up camp in Kings Canyon resort and then went for a swimming in their lovely outdoor swimming pool. We watched the sunset on Kings Canyon from a viewing platform. It was a lovely panoramic view of the canyon. Kings Canyon is a mighty chasm, set in Watarrka National Park, which is also where the western end of George Gill range sits. It took 400 million years for the canyon to form and it's now over 400 metres tall...
Kings Canyon, Northern Territory, Australia becky_stalleyWake up was way early today (5:30 am) and a ****** breakfast did not help at all. Toddy's needs to work on their breakfasts. We loaded up the trailer and loaded ourselves onto the bus. For sunrise, Reggie took us to John Flynn's memorial at the base of a tabletop mountain. After sunrise, we drove out into the real outback of Australia. It took a lot of driving, but we eventually made it to Ellery Creek Big Hole and skipped stones. Reggie told us about the area and showed us patty melons or "b...
Kings Canyon, Australia brettskiWe woke up again two hours before sunrise, but this time it was to travel over to Kings Canyon for an early morning hike. We hiked up through the cliffs and Reggie showed us the granite that the canyon is made of and also the plants growing there. We hiked for a while longer through the 'beehives' which were huge rocks eroded and rounded to look like a city. The hiking was fun, and eventually Reggie led us to the edge of the huge canyon. It was a huge canyon, not anything like the grand canyo...
Kings Canyon, Australia brettskiWe all woke up before dawn again. Most of the group went on a camel ride. I was planning to, but no one woke me up. When they returned from their camel ride, the rest of us had washed the dishes from breakfast and packed up the trailer. Reggie drove us to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). The Olgas are huge domes of rock that are eroded mountains from millions of years ago. Reggie gave us a talk about how all of these were formed and what everything meant. We then had 3 hours to hike through the Valley...
Kata Tjuta, Australia brettskiWake up was just as Reggie promised; early as hell and colder than a witches titty. We left the swags and sleeping bags in a pile and drove to Uluru. After watching the sunrise on Ayer's Rock, I joined the group on the side of the road by the bus. Reggie had everything set up and was cooking pancakes for us. After the pancakes, most of the group headed off to walk around the base of the rock. Tanya, Mandy, and I stayed to help Reggie load the trailer up after breakfast. We then drove our to t...
Uluru, Australia brettski We arrived here yesterday after a 300+ kms trip for the day.
Met up with friends Donna & Ron (with their dogs) who we keep running into along our travels.
We went to the Kings Canyon and looked at the route for the rim walk.
It is too hot to do the walk in the afternoon with temperatures above 36 deg. so we opted for the shorter river walk instead.
This morning we were up bright and early and we did the rim walk then. The initial climb of about 4400 mts. was hard (for Cheryl...
Got ready and set out for Kings Canyon Rim Walk. Thankfully the rain had cleared and made it a great day to do the walk. The first part of the walk was very steep and quite a bit of hard going up lots of steep steps made out of large rocks. We took a couple of breaks and enjoyed the view. The scenery was amazing on the walk and the boys did so well as it ended up being about 7km walk. Lots to see and climb so their minds were elsewhere from their legs. There are huge cliff faces of sandstone ...
Kings Canyon, Northern Territory, Australia drownsroundausPacked up from Curtin Springs on a cold and chilly morning - ice on the windscreen and headed 200km toward Kings Canyon. After detouring about 40km (missed the turn) we made it and got ourselves settled and had lunch. Then headed off in the drizzling rain to go to the Canyon and do the walk along the inside of the Canyon. It was only about 45min return walk and most of it was roughly paved. I felt it was a bit overrated (still beautiful scenery - had just seen better) and felt a little disapp...
