Rest and relaxation in southern India

INDIA - Final thoughts. The thing that struck me the most about all of India, from the northernmost tip of Darjeeling, to the southernmost side of Kerala, was the palpable sense of comraderie and love there is between children and adults. Happy children are cherished, loved, revered, fawned over. In addition, I noticed the respect and ease with which people treated eachother. This is a generalisation! But for the most part, India was a very easy, gentle place. It was manic, and crazy, and dir...

Kerala - Peace, relaxation... and the Mozzies!!

Kerala Backwaters...... Our next stop brought us to a small scale Ayurvedic resort set on the backwaters. After another hair raising journey in a taxi ignoring traffic lights and on coming traffic we arrived in one piece. Of course Mish slept most of the journey as is the case in most four wheeled vehicles. After changing rooms from the dungeon that opened up onto the dining area for everyone we ended up staying in a cute palm-leaf hut which opens straight onto the water's edge - perfectly pl...

... does the cleaning. We are very happy staying in this very clean home stay which has been cared for out of love. It shows in how everything sparkles and is in good repair. What a change from what we have experienced in the last month! Becca tried on her saree again today and showed it to Miss June and Grace after which they brought out some gold bangles for her to wear with it. Next came a set of earrings with the same purple as the border of her saree, and a beautiful rosary ...

Fort Cochin - Fishy fun

... this, it was fun to get involved., to be a part of local tradition. On our first evening, we were fortunate enough to find a local arts group that were putting on a classical Indian music performance. For an hour we were whisked away, tapping our feet and nodding to the sounds of north India. We could have sat there all night, enchanted by the sound of sitar and tabla. Occasionally, there would be a faint nod of the head or briefest of eye contact between ...

House boating the backwaters

When we arrived at our house boat it was just Wow! We have a double story house boat with 6 bedrooms with en-suite and large living area with comfy chairs. The scenery of all the house boats on the water ways with lush greenery was magnificent. We were asking if we could take the house boat all the way to Chennai, sadly not possible. It was real relaxing lazing back in luxury ...

... to see was a royal palace. 60 rupees for the car to enter, 100 rupees each to get into the palace, a tip for the guide and a tip for the person who looked after your shoes, which you had to leave outside. Still less than £4 in all mind. After we saw that and an impressive temple next door (but weren't able to enter, being non-Hindu) we jumped back in the cab. Next stop was a wildlife sanctuary. Again, despite this being a classic tourist ...

A memorable week at Amma's ashram

... hundred other people, we attended a very memorable meditation session in the main temple one morning, led by Amma of course, and followed by her enlightened reflection on a couple of questions put to her by devotees ... this was followed by lunch, sitting on the floor of the temple, served to each and everyone by Amma herself ... and noone took a bite before each of the 200 persons were served and ...

... possiblity, we work 50-50 with an indian, buy into his restaurant for a couple of grand and reap the rewards, he handles the police and we all have a hand in the business. We had an offer from a guy for a really nice place but it wasn't right, however, the pipe dream is alive, its a whisker away and I can smell the Goa shores. To be honest, if there was a decent place in Goa we could run for a season and make a profit I dont see why not, if only for ...

tea plantations, wooing cobras, tea plantations

... a couple of occassions, it seemed the trance effect of the playing lost its hold and the snakes had a couple of good goes out our entertainer, which he deftly, but a little nervously, dodged. A small family came by to watch. Then, to the delight of all, one of the cobras decided to rear at the crowd and slowly made its way toward us. As one might expect, being faced with the nasty end of a cobra is a pretty exchilirating/ scary as **** experience. I backed away, Steve ...

... then rear-ended. Of course this was high drama for all those in the vicinity so it wasn't long before the entire bus had disembarked and joined with other passerbys to witness the conversation between the bus driver, conductor and the driver of the car. The accident completely blocked the left lane and so all the traffic behind us was forced to use the right lane thereby creating a large traffic jam. After about 15 mins of standing about I noticed that people were starting to ...
