Frozen up in the mountains!

Wutaishan was one of our greatest disasters to date.Hee and there's been a few. I booked a hostel which gave directions to Wutaishan bus station but was in fact in Nanning- a whole other provence. Oops.
Pretty place, once we'd finally checked into somewhere in our price range. It was the coldest place I've ever been. The water in the river had frozen solid! We had pot noodles in bed and tried some rice wine, (evil smelling stuff) and quickly got on a bus out of there!
Love Lucy xxx
Datong

... and people taking pictures!

When we reached Datong we caught the bus to our hotel and checked in. Because there is no hostels in Datong we had to book a proper hotel for once. This turned out to be a 4 star luxury business hotel, not bad for £12 a night!!! We actually had a private bathroom with a toilet instead of a squat, toilet roll, bath, tv, air con, mini bar and even comlimentary toothbrushes!! We hadn't ...

Clean air and solitude

... clean air was most welcome. Especially given the state of the air around the Chinese cities. Heading away from the town, I found what looked like a walking path and set off with no real destination in mind. As it turned out, it wasn't so much a walking path as animal tracks that took me up a mountain. That sorted the question of where I was going, then. Upwards. I walked for several hours, seeing a new peak within reach every time I got to what I had ...

Pingyao

... is a very old walled town, one of very few left in China. There are no cars or motorbikes allowed inside the walls during the daytime which means almost complete peace. We got warm friendly smiles from everyone there. We went for a nice dinner with an Aussie bloke, his Chinese teacher and an English lad Pete who we met at our hostel. Got to see Chinese people at their best tonight ...

2 Parts Buddhism, Add 3 Parts Capitalism, Stir

... number of hotels and restaurants. Everywhere you go there are pilgrims and monks wandering, shopping, or praying. I saw monks working their cell phones, playing doom on the Internet, and bargaining for bananas...I guess they live like anyone else but it all seemed like such a crazy contrast. In exchange for my ongoing translation and "guide" services, my new German friends insisted on buying me lunch AND dinner, so it was a rather well-fed Shawn the ...

Hanging Monastery

... pillars and the interior is literally half-house, half-cave. The complex is located at the foot of Mt. Hengshan, which is one of the five "Sacred Mountains" in China...an old Emperor first visited the mountain circa 2372 BC. Anyway we arrive and its quite a site to see this old monastery built into the side of the cliff like some magnet stuck on your refrigerator! From far off you cant really see the pillars so it really does look like it was just ...
