Gruss Ralf
Macau, China schwate... we know from 50's spy films noirs, we just need our trench coats. We took a trolley up Guia Hill the highest point on the peninsula. Up on Guia Hill is the old Portuguese Monte Fort that overlooks the city and harbor. From here we can see that there is another part of Macau; the new Macau of mega Los Vegas style casinos. Macau is famous for its casinos and they are building some huge ones. Gambling is legal here but not ...
Macau, China yoni... and beachcombing for shells along an oddly-colored shore. Black Sand Bay is really that--a small bay with a decent-sized beach of black sand. This sand is not volcanic, as I had pictured when we were getting ready to go there, but instead is brought from mineral deposits upstream on the small river that flows down to the sea. At the eastern edge of the bay are huge granite boulders ...
Tong gu Village/Hei Sha Wan, China bethverde... As we wandered through Guangzhou's green, narrow streets, lined with old Chinese terrace buildings past the alleys that winded off into cool shade and navigated the packed crowds that filled the streets, I had visions of the Canton of my history books - 19th century foreign devils dressed to the nines, dark opium dens, men with straw hats transporting robed hob knobs in rickshaws, etc. etc. (insert more fanciful images here). It was also an adventure in some of the ...
Dongguan, China oliviaboydRosie says....Macau is a tiny country, consisting of a peninsular connected to the Chinese mainland and two islands (Taipa and Coloane). The Portuguese arrived here in the mid 1500s and fought of loal pirates. As a reward, the Chinese government allowed them to rent the land and trade through its ports. This opened up trade between China and the rest of Europe. The Portuguese influence in Macau is deep-rooted. Although most ...
Macau, Macau leon1974... I have never been so happy to eat cornflakes and an orange, they are crazily rare in Asia so far on my experience and far more appealing to me first thing in the morning than a bird so freshly dead that it almost twitches (yesterday). So after breakfast we met with Lulu's mum and an 'Uncle' friend (it seems any friend of the family is a uncle or auntie, we have met about 15 so far) who drove us to meet our tour guide for the day, a guy named Hugh who spoke very good English ...
Guangzhou, China ebenbolter... and arrive in the dead of night, we decided it would be more prudent stay in Guangzhou and leave early next morning instead. Micah was dispatched to buy us the train tickets and it was just a short tme afterwards that we finally got the joke - there was no train line to Macao - it was bus or nothing. So we walked around trying to find somewhere to stay when some enterpreneur stepped in and promised us cutdown prices at good hotels. With nothing to lose we followed ...
Guangzhou, China garethbirdukBefore our visit, we knew very little about Macau and pleased to find there is a lot crammed into this small Chinese province; a long history as a fishing and trading port between Europe and China, fantastic museums, an annual motor race and the only dog racing track in Asia. The Portuguese influence is everywhere in this former colony. Some amazing architecture ...
Macau, Macau binghamsMacau was pretty cool. We only spent a couple of days there but we were able to do some casino hopping and a lot of walking around because we were in walking distance to a lot of churches, museums and the goon-yum statue (Goddess of Mercy). We ate a lot of those beef jerkies and almond cookies because that is their specialty here. A lot of the ...
Macau, China bidiAfter 24 hours suffering on the train,I arrived at Guangzhou. When I saw the broken train station,I was so disappointed.Guangzhou is one of the biggest cities in China, how it can have such an old station, this kind of station can not symbolize a big city. As soon as I left the station,I went to Huaxia Hotel to find the Vietnam consulate in Guangzhou.I need get my visa there. It costs me 17RMB to get there, this price is OK,I thought.Because Guangzhou has very high consumption level.I ...
