Rain in the forest

It was still raining when the train pulled into Ramnagar station. The night before, we had left a sweltering Delhi behind and were chugging along in the Ranikhet-Corbett Link Express through the humid June night when my slumber was punctuated by what I thought were intermittent dreams of a bountiful monsoon. It wasn't till I had tossed and turned a few times on the narrow train berth that I realised that it was more than a dream. It was a nightmare! God in heaven, it was raining! Our wildlif...

Mysore via Masinguda

Leaving Ooty we are dropped at the top of the Nilgiri Hills and do the 3hour trek down through the forest; this is a really good walk but 100% down so I have a slightly tight calf; they have large red malabar squirrels here as well as lots of eagles and hornbills; of course the guide showed us the leopard droppings. We stayed at a jungle retreat which was excellent - 12 of us in one big dorm is by the by. The Aussies had mixed views on their election result but one was buying the beer. We wen...

Jungle Retreat

We had two nights at Jungle Retreat - a wonderfully relaxing set of cottages near some impressive mountains and wildlife national parks. A long story, but we unexpectedly ended up staying here in a tree house! We went on some walks and jeep safaris and saw a range of wildlife including some elephant. In one encounter the mother charged at the jeep and stopped about 10m away with a loud trumpet. The driver did not seem too concerned but it was exciting for us. From here, another car ride to Pa...

Mountains and tea

We were up at 6:15 am and on the road at 7:20 am for our 4 day/3 night stay in Ooty.  Ooty is also known as Udhagamandalam and is about 6.5 hr drive sw from Bangalore via Mysore through mountains and tea plantations.  Forturnately we had an experienced Indian driver, Arthi, to negotiate the potholes and the 36 hairpin turns to get to Ooty.  On the way we passed through Bandapor National park but didn't see any elephants - only monkeys.  The first stop was the Jungle Retreat, a resort just pas...

Ramnagar-- "A dusty, unappealing place"

... stays at the Corbett Tiger Reserve. After breakfast, he sat down with us and we began planning our accomodations. Unknown to us, making reservations in the core zone of the park (Dhikala, the most diverse and deepest area) was actually near-impossible for foriegners to do by themselves. Girish had three full journals of reviews lefts by tourists over several years explaining all the troubles they had had, and how convienient Girish had made it. We figured that, since John ...

Don't Worry Chicken Curry

... a double bed hastely assembled. I was to stay down here whilst they lived in the flat above, I guess you could call it some sort of reverse colonism. Anyway it's not all bad I've a western style toilet, my food brought to me by a tiffin man and a shower with hot water - or so I thought - the showers broken and there's no hot water, but it is around to 40 degrees (130 degrees Farenheit for my older readers) so no great loss. And I m anaged to sneak ...

... in and shoot the breeze for a while. Lucas took us down some back streets, down some stairs and round some bends until we appeared suddenly outside an incredibly cheap off-licence. Smuggling our illicit alcohol back into the Lucas' room in the hostel was easy but we obviously made too much noise whilst there as two cleaners came snooping around ...

... an attack of severe vomiting, or Delhi-belli if you prefer. Still lesson learnt, if you're ever offered strange looking mutton curry for breakfast it's best to just politely refuse. You'd think someone'd tell you these things. In another break from routine I also managed to escape the office at lunch time, slipping out when no one was looking, and found myself a nice park to have lunch in. Another group who ...

Don't Go Near The Water

I was soon able to bluff my way through most conversations on the topic and any questions I didn't know how to answer I just blamed on the questioner's English. Despite a few near misses; the banner maker not being able to spell and the memento maker not seeing the problem with not making the trophies he'd ...
