      Typhoon Ruby

A travel blog entry by elsat on Dec 06, 2014

13 months later we are faced with yet another megastorm. The wind and rain has began, and though we are far more prepared than last time, it is still too soon. Tensions are high. Luckily the storm may spare us the greatest destruction, but those facing the storm head on are still dealing with recovering from Typhoon Haiyan. We need thoughts and prayers. Typhoon Ruby may last until Sunday evening. I will update when I can. ...

On paper, the journey to Malapascua looked like a piece of cake, - a short flight, a bus ride to the top and a tiny little ferry, so small it was hardly worth mentioning. As with all of my boughts of naive optimism (travelwise) reality has very different ideas, it shakes its worldweary old head, has a good old chuckle at your half-baked plans and then throws a big bag of spanners into the works.

Not where I really want to be but I didn't what to get shut out of a room for a second night. Its not that Calbayog is bad or anything but its not the beach scene I'm looking for. So I get a room for one night and will be heading off in the morning. The town looks nice with of course lots of fast food places and shops. It does have a ocean walk that is being built and maybe someday worth more then just a ...

... in Catbalogan at around 2pm. To put this in perspective our starting point, Marabut, is approximately 120km from Catbalogan...there are no buses or vans directly in between the two towns even though there is a decent coastal road which connects the two....we took (including waiting time and a lazy breakfast) 30 hours to get those 120km and actually travelled more like 300km plus...it's more fun in the Philippines! Da ...

      Catbalogan

A travel blog entry by frawldog on Nov 07, 2011

... city of Catbalogan. Catbalogan was 2 hours past Calbayog. The lonely planet book says the roads between the two cities are hell, but they must have been updated because they were not so bad. The vans ran quite smooth and were a lot better than buses. The cities and villages we passed today are still ****** and old, but the island itself is better than where we were previously in South East Luzon. It's a bit more tropical. More palms trees. The weather is getting ...
