... quite exhausting. The couple of days I spend in the area, I visit the villages of Nawalgarh, Mandawa, Fatehpur, Mahansar and Ramgarh using local public transport. It becomes an odissey that tests one's nerves and pacience. I spend more time sitting down in buses than visiting havelis, and it comes as no surprise that after 12 hours (more than 9 in some sort of transport system) and an appalling sun I am totally knackered and wishing to go back to the official circuit.<br>
Nawalgarh, Rājasthān, India tonicastells... the heavens opened and the thunder and lightning started. It was really refreshing standing out in the rain as it was so hot! But then the electricity cut out and we were left in the pitch darkness. The camp workers got us all some candles for our huts and we found our way back. We stood in the doorway watching the storm and loving the coolness of the water. The only problem was that our fan was no longer working so our hut is beyond hot. I think we are in for a pretty uncomfortable night!
Khuri, Rājasthān, India edandali... emphasising the class of craftmanship which for me will now forever associated with the Indian/Moghul culture. The doors were fortified with heavy brass studs, which could do serious damage if an attempt was made to raid the merchants quarters, bearing in mind that silks, jewels from Jaipur, and spices were extremely valuable commodities, and ever tradeable on the black markets. The doors were tall, sufficient to give entry to a heavily laden ...
Shekhawati, Rajasthan, India gaynorlizb... amazing, considering that the artwork had to be applied before the plaster had set. We stayed at Apani Dhani, an eco lodge, which was the main attraction for us to this out of the way town. The owner of the lodge travelled and lived in Europe for a while and when he came back to his village in India he realized a need to preserve and enhance the environment. Ramesh built a series of ...
Mandawa, India z00b... untouched. We climbed up a turret and enjoyed cool beverages looking over the city and sunset. Back at the hotel we enjoyed dinner at e rooftop restaurant and what was better it was free!we tried our luck at getting a beer it worked!stoked!we watched a boy do his very feminine dancing which was amazing!he could do the head wobble...when we get home we would demonstrate if we could! He invited a few of the group members including Tamsin to get up one by one and try ...
Mandawa, India buddha_belly... a woman on her approach to the statue drop to her hands and knees several times, kissing the ground covered in feces , before standing up again to take another step and drop back down. The locals who were praying were doing so ferverently and wholesomely seeemed to believe in the godliness of their rats. It is said that if a rat runs across your foot, it is good luck. I consider it luck that I didn't have that experience. What also is good luck is eating some food with ...
Mandawa, India trg7... guest huts, composting, and encouraging a fair "partnership" between tourists and locals-meaning Ramesh consistently hires local artisans and musicians at honest prices so that the town doesn't fall prey to touts and scams more familiar to cities like Jaipur and Jodhpur. Pros: Beautiful setting, warm hospitality, clean rooms, I suggest two days at Apani Dhani for a "craft" activity, an afternoon ...
Shekhawati, India gyspyjessy... blast their air-raid sirens, and I have never known such abuse of tv speakers - such unnecessary volume. Well after midnight last night a flip-flod shod army stormed our hotel possibly rehearsing for a team-building percussion session. With my prudish English tip-toe whisper-whisper nightime mindset I'm struggling to see the funny side.. Laura
Sikar, India hubbardtim... us to a few houses of friends or relatives, the last one of which is his house which we are invited into. I decide to bail and head back but Connie went in. When we met up later she told me she saw pretty much what I expected which was a sob story (legitimate) and a request for some money. I guess one of the ladies put a baby in her arms and told her to take it back to Germany which she cried about that night.
