So after departing sunny Ringgold, we began the first proper road-leg of our tour. This one began by retracing our steps back to Atlanta, before setting off North East towards the mountains. First stop was a little place called Winder, to meet up with some of Leah's friends - Josh & Ellie, and Paul & Rebecca. Josh is a tennis coach and had a lesson til late on so the rest of us went for ...

... starting point, then turn around and walk back down. Day one wasn't bad. I made it to the shelter about 8 miles down the trail, but there was still so much daylight left I decided to go a couple more miles before setting up camp. Shortly after hiking more, I half regretted it, just because I was tired and going uphill and it would have been nice hanging out with the other hikers, but in the end I was fine with my decision. I didn't make it the couple of miles I had planned ...

... for many years and decided to head for the mountains for a change. But mountains and Florida are not quite synonymous. The nearest was either South Carolina or northern Georgia. The Appalachian Trail has always held mystique since meeting a through hiker many years ago. So we headed to Georgia and Mile 1 (or Miles 1,146 pending where you start).

Dahlonega, GA is an old mining town in the mountains and a perfect setting ...
